Opinion: Defender Turns Down Spurs Contract Giving Pochettino Food For Thought

By Joe Fish -

Japhet Tanganga has rejected Tottenham Hotspur’s initial offer of a new contract, according to Football Insider.

The 20-year-old defender’s current deal at Spurs expires in June and we’d be foolish to let him go after a breakthrough pre-season.

Jack Pitt-Brooke of The Athletic believes that Tanganga is one of three youngsters, along with Oliver Skipp and Troy Parrott, whom Mauricio Pochettino is ready to trust in the first-team squad when several senior players leave at the end of the campaign.

However, Spurs need to be careful that Tanganga does not follow them out of the door as Football Insider understands that he has he knocked back the offer of a contract extension on improved terms.

Spurs will go back to the negotiating table and you would not have thought that money would be a major sticking point at Tanganga’s age and profile.

It may be that the centre-back wants greater assurances about his playing time. His only appearance this season was in the League Cup and he has yet to be named in a Premier League matchday squad.

If Pochettino is serious about keeping Tanganga, and he should be with Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld’s future uncertain, he may want to integrate him into the first team sooner than he planned.

Good point, I agree that one experienced P.L central defender is essential. However, Toby paid the going rate would do the same job…

About what? I had a funny feeling things would go wrong in our first full season in the new place. We’ll sort it out. I’m not panicking. Soon as we drop the unwanted we’ll move on and be fine.

I believe Toby and Jan should be replaced by proven quality with PL experience preferably.A partnership of Lascelles and Aka would be a good start. The ones we have aren’t ready yet.

if Mings can make the England squad why can’t Coady get a look in?

I reckon Toby and Jan will probably leave and then this kid will be one of four of Dier, Sanchez, Foyth as our central defenders.

This guy looked the real deal in pre season. After Diers horror show yesterday theres no reason his integration cannot be accelerated.
