“Opened doors” – Dejan Kulusevski discusses his connection to Zlatan Ibrahimovic

By Eddie Razo -

Tottenham Hotspur winger Dejan Kulusevski had their share of footballers they admired, like many young fans growing up. But, for the 21-year-old raised in Sweden, Zlatan Ibrahimovic is a player many admired.

Kulusevski spoke to The Guardian, stating that he could relate to Ibrahimovic’s background, who was born in Sweden to a Bosnian father and Croatian mother. Meanwhile, the Spurs winger was born in Sweden, although his parents are from North Macedonia.

“Zlatan opened doors to us people in Sweden that nobody can imagine,” Kulusevski says. “He really helped every young kid … kids who were outsiders, showing them that everything is possible. When he started mentioning my name as a player, I was like a kid at Christmas.”

Ibrahimovic came out of international football retirement for Sweden last March. The 40-year-old will be part of the squad joining players like Kulusevski for their World Cup play-offs. The Swedish national team will face the Czech Republic on Thursday and, if they win, they will play Poland for a place at the finals.

Nonetheless, Kulusevski will look to observe as much knowledge from one of his idols as the duo want to provide the offense that can send Sweden to the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
