Null & Voiding The Season Is Surely The Only Sensible Solution [opinion]

By The Boy -

Speculation over the coronavirus pandemic’s impact on live sport has understandably been running rife, with Tottenham Hotspur being as involved as any other organization.

Amongst the many splendid live events that our current owners had scheduled for the summer – beyond the football matches – were live concerts and a world-class boxing match between Anthony Joshua and Kubrat Pulev. That fight, along with all the other events looks doomed to now be scrapped.

The Daily Mail

Many have chipped in their two cents worth in respect of how English football should proceed, and I can only agree with the respected sports lawyer Richard Cramer – who says that ultimately the season will have to be declared null and void.

This will, of course, provoke temper tantrums from those most savagely affected by the injustice of it all, but that as they say is show business.

Liverpool Football Club might be particularly appalled by such a decision, given their current grip on the Premier League title. And they are unlikely to be a lone voice. However, Liverpool’s specific association with tragedy really ought to provide both it and it’s supporters with a head-start when it comes to retaining a sense of decorum in the midst of crisis.

The repercussions of this pandemic will absolutely not be wrapped up in a few weeks, and the sooner folks embrace that reality, the better.

What seems remarkably daft, is to concoct some “Pools Panel” end to the various divisions’ proceedings.

Barry Hearn is spot on here, this is on a par with a world war in terms of disruption, and so the precedent is to call a halt to all the divisions, and begin again when the COVID-19 fog has cleared.

This is the first “instance” in our premiere league history we’ve had money and we’ve spent well I think.

yes – they are saying that over 20% of the population could catch it and never even notice as the symptoms are so mild. up to 80% wouldn’t even be able to tell the difference to a bad cough.
honestly – this whole thing is crazy.

Do you think all this is “minor” and the world should continue “carrying on” as normal? (And I don’t just mean 💩paper) or should the world listen to you?

The man is a hypocryte. Levy maintains spending doesnt equal success.. Yet he’s doing everything possible to make money. What for? And what does bring success then?… That’s confidential too I expect!

Possible alternative is to have two players from each club play the scheduled matches on FIFA 20 each week. Same goes for the CL/ EL/ Euros. Does FIFA 20 have VAR? .

Anyone who believes that they will see a serious game of football before October is deluded. Season 2019 /2020 is KAPUT !!!!!!!!

As a follow up, I was informed earlier that at the supporters trust meeting he was quizzed about how much the summer events will make. His answer was it’s confidential. Let that sink in a minute. It’s not confidential we are paying x amount for the rest of eternity to pay for something he’s making money hand over fist about is it?

Can’t see why spurs fans think they are gonna see any of it anyway. If there was one instance in history to make me think we would I’d agree. There isn’t. He’s bothered about an nfl franchise, that’s it.

No I get where your coming from, but until we actually see the benefits of it invested in the team, I don’t want those parasites making a penny out of it. Could even handle if they said we paid a load off the debt. But they won’t. This is why Dan is now in the firbes list as a billionaire

Cancel the Euros instead, finish the domestic league seasons in the late spring/summer. International football is garbage anyway, shouldn’t even have it outside the World Cup. No Euros, no AfCon, no Nations League, no international breaks every years so Kane and co can go get crocked in friendlies against plumbers from San Marino. I’d much rather have a league season without interruptions than have international matches, barring the WC finals.

The number of infections are low because it’s new. It’s so contagious that it’s believed the majority of the population will get it. At a conservative estimate is 40m. If measures aren’t taken to slow it down, the NHS will not cope and the death rate will soar. By being collectively vigilant we will save a huge number of lives – possibly over a million in this country.

If the season is null and void, it restarts in the same way as this one did – ie we’d be in the CL

Something like 290 virus specialists have come out and said it’s a terrible idea viruses mutate and there is already apparently a second strain of covid the who has said it’s a bad idea and every other country is listening

But we know better right?

Fyi…herd immunisation could be better in long run based on scientific research that suggests there maybe another break out in autumn. And no vaccine for 18 months.

Stopping people leaving the house would also solve murder and burglary rates. Maybe over reaction… But could be worth it?

Yeah but china lockdown and did what was necessary to stop the spread as has most of Europe, none of them have decided to go with herd immunity bs

Yes it maybe overreacting
Yes it may not be necessary

But it works

And saves most lives

In my opinion obviously

China has 1 .6bln and still less than 90k cases. Yes it’s easily transmitted, but all the dead globally bar 1 had pre existing conditions. Not saying they are not a loss, or this is not bad, but context is required.

It’s been here for 2 or 3 weeks so in that time only 1 person would of been killed by a cow assuming they politely spaced them out equally. To put it into better context the Ebola breakout in America something 90% mortality rate only had 11 cases and 7 fatalities whereas this has already killed more!!

It’s not the fatality rate that’s dangerous it’s how easily it is caught also its 35 out of 1362 to put into fair context the other 55,998,638 are still not immune or unaware they have it

Yes… It’s about 1.4% but all bar 1 case had underlying issues. The problem is the lack of immunisation, if you had no immunisation in the flu it would kill far more. I am not saying it’s not a bad thing, but how about instead of saying to all “don’t go out…” You say “if you are vulnerable, or look after someone vulnerable… Don’t go out”. I personally have little to no contact with anyone in the vulnerable category, I may bump into those that do, but they need to consider what they are doing. Fyi… Current infection rates in UK are 1500 out of 66m. So 0.001% ISH… Of that 91% will be fine many showing to symptoms. The likelihood of even meeting sometime with it is slim.

Yes…I get that, but 35 from 66m …20 people a year get killed by cows!

I get this but the mortality rate is much higher than flu and is killing at a rate because it spreads quickly, still think its man made tbh but just think not taking it seriously could be a mistake

They had other health issues also. Some may have passed away as a result of those issues, some may have got seasonal flu and passed away.

As sad as it is for each and everyone of those affected it’s a tiny percentage against those who’ve contracted the virus and even smaller percentage against those who haven’t.

Interestingly if this season is voided which I strongly suspect will happen as the peak for this virus is said to be three months away what will happen re CL places for next season? It is possible that we will be in the CL again by default. That may be enough to persuade Kane and Son to stay one more season and for some quality players to be recruited. Will the loss of gate receipts for not playing the remaining EPL fixtures be less than the CL money for next season plus the money for getting a CL spot.?

It’s a cough…91% barely register symptoms… More people die per day with TB than covid-19 has killed so far…!

That said, I agree, this will not get dealt with in 2+3 weeks, and the longer it goes on the more complex. What happens with players whose contracts expire this summer? So do they have to play for the club while out of contract? But if you cancel it what happens with sponsorship etc…? This is not a simple problem.
