‘Not sure where his situation would be in terms of loan or stay’ – Big call from respected journalist

By Mehdi Gokal -

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Oliver Skipp finds himself in a situation of uncertainty about his immediate future at the club, according to Mike McGrath.

Having been a part of the Tottenham setup since 2008, Skipp made his mark in the first team last season, seizing the opportunity with impressive performances, particularly during injuries in the midfield.

Under new manager Ange Postecoglou, Skipp’s good form has continued in the pre-season, including a brace against Barcelona.

However, with Postecoglou favoring an attacking 4-3-3 formation, there appears to be limited space for a defensive midfielder, a role where Yves Bissouma has been gaining prominence.

While Tottenham has experimented with both Sarr and Skipp alongside Bissouma in pre-season, James Maddison is expected to be a consistent starter.

The upcoming Premier League opener against Brentford could provide more insight into Postecoglou’s preferred midfield setup.

Given Skipp’s need for regular playing time for his development, a potential loan move has been considered.

However, Mike McGrath, speaking on the Last Word on Spurs podcast, expressed his preference for Skipp to remain with the squad this season.

He lauded Skipp’s talent and potential and suggested that keeping him around could be beneficial.

He said:

“I’ve always been a fan of Skipp, and when I said earlier that I wasn’t sure about him which you picked up on. I’m not sure where his situation would be in terms of loan or stay.

He’s an excellent, young English talent and he’s really promising and if you asked my opinion on it he’s one I’d want around the squad if I was Ange Postecoglou.”

TBH says:

Considering the potential departure of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and the current injury to Rodrigo Bentancur, Tottenham might face a midfield shortage, making Skipp’s presence valuable.

In addition, Postecoglou’s inclination to work with and improve young talents could make this season an important one for Skipp’s growth within the club.
