New isssues with De Zerbi’s Tottenham squad provide food for thought

The mental health of Tottenham players is now a thing, after a recent interview on The 2 Robbies Podcast (NBC Sports, around April 9, 2026), De Zerbi discussed the challenges at Spurs during a turbulent season. He noted that while the team has quality, the “mental part” or “mental aspect” is the main issue right now. He emphasised the need to “build a new mentality,” treat the remaining games (around 7 at the time) as a “big opportunity,” and help players regain confidence to escape the current situation.

The Tottenham Puzzle

Tottenham were in a poor position (around 17th, near the relegation zone) after a disastrous season under previous management. De Zerbi was brought in as a proven Premier League coach (from Brighton) known for intense, possession-based, proactive football that demands high mental and tactical buy-in.

Certainly, whenever Spurs are discussed, there seems to be a sense that analysts are trying to solve a puzzle, rather than comment on a football team. De Zerbi gave us a clue in his opening statement after his appointment:

“It’s not the right moment to speak about my philosophy for football. I’m here now at the end of the season because we have to win the games. In football, the style of play, the tactical disposition are important.

There is a mentality and I would like to help the players to reach the best mentality we can show. I signed five years of contract because, for me, it’s a big challenge and I will be the coach of Tottenham next season, no matter what. … We are lucky – I am lucky – because I have big players with big talent and my work is to help the players to show their qualities.”

Conclusion

The squad has been described as low on confidence, tentative (especially defensively), and struggling with consistency/pressure. Fans and pundits have noted a fragile “mentality” after poor results. De Zerbi’s approach involves individual coaching, emotional connection with players, and rebuilding belief quickly.

De Zerbi has his hands full; he clearly anticipates this as a long-haul deal, but what levels of support will he find waiting for him from the owner’s ENIC?
