Tottenham Hotspur were held to a 2-2 draw against Brentford in their Premier League opener on Sunday.
Goals from Cristian Romero and Emerson Royal allowed Ange Postecoglou’s men to grind out a draw away from home.
In his column with the Times, Tony Cascarino has now explained that Brazilian international striker Richarlison has big boots to fill after the departure of Harry Kane and his performance against Brentford was quite underwhelming.
Cascarino added that Kane had the ability to combine well with his teammates and create goal scoring opportunities for Tottenham. However, Richarlison has not been able to showcase that quality yet.
The Brazilian struggled to link up with the likes of James Maddison, Son Heung-min and Dejan Kulusevski. Apart from being a prolific goalscorer, Kane was an excellent playmaker as well.
Regarding the link up between Richarlison and Maddison, Cascarino claimed that the Brazilian ‘never gelled with him’. Maddison did have an eventful game though and he will look to build on that in the coming weeks.
Richarlison is clearly not a player of his calibre, and it remains to be seen whether Tottenham can bring in someone who can replace Kane properly.
The Brazilian had an underwhelming season with Tottenham last year as well and he has not been able to live up to the expectations since his big money move from Everton. Tottenham are reportedly keeping tabs on a number of attackers and it will be interesting to see if they can bring in the right replacements before the transfer window closes.
Richarlison has the technical attributes to develop into a top-class forward and he will be determined to silence his doubters this season.
