José Mourinho is an accomplished tightrope walker when it comes to the game’s officials – and boy did Jonathan Moss test everyone’s patience last night. Watching the gaffer talk, he could be mistaken for a bioengineered replicant, he’s so lacking in emotion.
The first penalty (which we’ll review in detail later on) was pure gamesmanship and the second, as José suggests warranted retrospective action for simulation. Bruno Fernandes is a cheat, right up there with Diego Costa. Quite how Moss bought the theatrics is one matter, and how VAR didn’t recommend a yellow is another.
Mourinho will be lucky not to get a pull from the FA here, but then one might expect them to move matters along, less they draw more attention upon themselves.
I know it’s a while since Dier played as a centre back and he played well, but where has he been living if he doesn’t know that every player in or near the box is actively seeking contact from defenders. They want defenders to stick out a leg or grab hold of them especially with VAR watching everything. Wake up Eric you’re a seasoned International player not some youth team player.
