Jose Mourinho’s latest comments about Heung-min Son might not sit well with Tottenham supporters

By Mehdi Gokal -

Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho has showered praise on the club’s star forward, Heung-min Son, in a recent interview, hailing him as one of the best players in the world.

The Portuguese manager took over Spurs in 2019, replacing Mauricio Pochettino. His time at the club was turbulent. His first season saw him finish 6th with Spurs. In the second season, he guided them to a League Cup final. However, just days before the final against Manchester City, the club sacked him.

Ryan Mason took over as the interim manager and ended up losing the final to Manchester City.

Despite his short stint at Spurs, Mourinho seems to have some fond memories, specially regarding certain players. Under him, several players thrived, one of them was the current Tottenham captain.

During Mourinho’s tenure, Son made 70 appearances for Tottenham, netting 29 goals and providing 25 assists. These impressive stats underscored Son’s pivotal role in the team’s attacking prowess under Mourinho’s guidance.

In an interview with EA Sports FC, Mourinho expressed his admiration for Son’s abilities, asserting that he views the South Korean forward as one of the finest players globally.

Mourinho’s praise didn’t stop there, as he suggested that Son possesses the skill set to thrive in any top team, including Premier League giants like Manchester City and Liverpool.

While acknowledging that his comments might not sit well with Tottenham supporters, Mourinho emphasised Son’s versatility and mobility as attributes that make him a standout talent in the modern game.

He said:

“I don’t look at Son as a Korean player. I look at Son as one of the best players in the world. Maybe Tottenham supporters aren’t going to be happy with what I’m going to say, it’s not disrespectful.

“He could win titles, he could play for the best teams. He could be playing in England for Man City, for Liverpool, for Chelsea. It could be abroad playing for one of the top teams.

“He has that modern mobility of the attacking players. He can play through the middle, from the sides, wide to coming inside.”

Son’s impact at Tottenham since joining the club in 2015 has been significant, with the forward amassing an impressive tally of 162 goals and 83 assists in 405 appearances. His stellar performances have solidified his status as one of the top attackers in world football.

With Son’s contract set to expire in less than 18 months, Tottenham are keen to secure his future at the club.

In fact, it has been recently reported by Sky Sports’ Michael Bridge that Tottenham are engaged in talks with their captain regarding a new deal.
