“More totally pointless gestures. When will all this nonsense end?” Some Are Unimpressed With Proposed Boxing Day Initiative

By The Boy -

There is a plan in place for Premier League sides to wear their away shirts for the forthcoming Boxing Day fixtures, this season. This would be in order to raise funds and awareness for homeless charity Shelter. The story as run by the Mail Online is about the potential embarrassment at play, as the English Football League had apparently already rejected the proposals, which have apparently been subsequently welcomed by individual clubs.

It’s no surprise that Tottenham is cited by the Mail as one club that has asked if the EFL has the authority to block such a proposal.

I take a view that the No Home Kit initiative has all the hallmarks of gesture politics. Sure, homelessness is a desperate problem, and any small thing that might improve the plight of the homeless is surely a good thing. That said, most endemic issues in society would benefit from institutional reform from the state, opposed to the occasional charitable handout.

These readers responded in an equally sceptical manner to what is just the latest in a series of campaigns that have sought to align themselves with the sport.

Perhaps clubs could choose a charity and just make an ongoing commitment, in order to effect meaningful change? I’d love Tottenham to adopt a reputable and worthy cause and gift regular big sums of cold hard cash to it.

Totally agree with this, the world over.

I think Dele is probably too self obsessed to even have time to even think about virtue signalling. Too busy thinking about what bit of colour he can put on that dread just behind his ear…

That makes far too much sense, and besides there’s no selfies related to it that people can take to advertise the fact that they’re “doing their bit” all over their social media. One could be even more cynical and say that this is partly to boost sales of aways and third kits masquerading as doing a good turn.

100% virtue signaling, a bit like buying an electric car and telling everyone how you’ve helped to save the planet… Utterly pointless.

A bunch of multi millionaires wearing shirts to help people living rough? Do me a flavour. How about all the millionaires & billionaires pay their proper tax bill; I don’t mean the legal one, I mean the fair & ethical one. Then how about the government use a smidge of that to help support those sleeping rough to get on top of their lives a bit, and use a larger smidge to solve the ridiculous on going housing shortage too. Stopping tax breaks on pensions for those earning £150,000 and upwards would be a fair addition to that too, and alone is worth 15 to 20 billion…………….. RAH RAH RAH!

I’m doing it for charidy mate !

I’d be more impressed if the club just gave to a local charity without having to have bells and whistles attached. Typical of Levy and Co to insist on the look what we’re doing mantra.

If Levy donated 10% of his salary there wouldn’t be a homeless problem.

Seeing as we are now a land development agency, perhaps Daniel can sanction the build of a carbon zero housing scheme for the homeless on one of the many land banks snapped up by our woke chairman.

Most big business has a charity they partner for a year, so that’s a good shout to have a charity for the season. Fans who attended games may get a vote to pick from a list may engage a little with the fan base as well.
