Moment Of Madness – Gazzaniga Assault On Alonso Gifts Chelsea Penalty [Video]

By Joe Fish -

What on Earth is Paulo Gazzaniga doing here?

The goalkeeper lost his head – and seemingly control of his limbs – in first-half stoppage time to gift Chelsea a penalty and 2-0 lead.

And in the process he almost kicked Marcos Alonso’s head off.

Davinson Sanchez putting his hands on his head at the end of that clip encapsulates how all Spurs fans felt seeing Gazzaniga fly out like that.

Why is he even going with his feet there? Just come out and catch it. There was no need to panic anyway – Alonso had given up the chase of the ball.

Willian stuck away the spot kick to add to his earlier goal and put Chelsea in complete control, after the worst half of the Jose Mourinho era so far.

I saw it differently, and there is a better angle than that of above. It showed that Gazza’s flailing foot, at the point of near contact with the ball, was between 1 and 2 yards from alonso’s head; he was never in any danger. Also, alonso moves to the right just prior to the clash, taking him more solidly into the keeper’s body, and he lifts his arms and shoves his hands into Gazza’s head. I’m not saying I’m right, but it looked to me like a 50/50 collision between two players running at a loose ball. I still don’t get the penalty.

Maybe I’ve had too much claret?

Don’t know what Gazza was thinking, he had time to grab the ball or punch it, doing what he did was suicidal.
