Massive sign that Tottenham are getting closer to landing one of their top targets

Tottenham have been linked with quite a few players this summer and one of those has been Southampton captain Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (Standard), well, he was their captain but not no more.

It is being reported that the Saints manager Ralph Hassenhuttl has stripped Hojbjerg of the captaincy and handed it to James Ward-Prowse.

This was always on the cards for the simple reason that Hojbjerg has refused to commit to Southampton on a long term basis and has even gone public with his desire to play for a bigger club (90Mins).

This is significant news, it means that there is now very little chance of the Dane remaining on the south coast and that a move away is now inevitable.

The news that Hojbjerg was relieved of the Southampton captaincy was revealed by Sky Sports Lyall Thomas via his Twitter account.

The ball is now clearly in Tottenham’s court, Hojbjerg has done his bit, Southampton appears to have made their decision and it is now down to Daniel Levy and Jose Mourinho to do what they have to do to sign the 24-year-old midfielder.
