Luis Diaz’s father explains his son’s decision to join Liverpool over Spurs

By Eddie Razo -

In the final days of the January transfer window, Tottenham Hotspur was linked to former FC Porto winger Luis Diaz. The north London club didn’t land the Colombia international as he went to Liverpool, and Diaz’s father, Luis Diaz Sr., explained why.

Diaz Sr. stated that The Reds were faster than the other clubs who wanted to land his son last month. Liverpool didn’t let negotiations drag and went for the in to swoop because they needed him.

“Tottenham was one. Roma was also left behind in the process. They hesitated a lot and let themselves be caught by Liverpool,” Diaz Sr said to BluRadio’s Blog Deportivo (via talkSPORT).

“Liverpool were faster than them, they needed him, and they took him away. There were many suitors who wanted Luis’ services, but he had the dream of reaching Liverpool because Liverpool are an elite team.”

The failed pursuit of Diaz coincided with the failure to land Adama Traoré, so it was a rough few days for Tottenham. Nonetheless, the club secured a winger as they landed Dejan Kulusevski from Juventus while also landing his teammate with the Serie A club, Rodrigo Bentancur.

Only time will tell if Tottenham made the right decision by not moving faster to land Diaz or if they made the correct choice in their eyes by going another route.

Diaz was never coming to Spurs not matter how fast they moved. Liverpool have had Diaz as a long term target and they have a brilliant scouting network in Portugal and numerous contacts with clubs and agents.

That network is the result of years of hard work by Liverpool all guided by Michael Edwards who is leaving his job this year and who Liverpool took from Spurs in around 2010.

Edwards is the leader of the analytics department at Liverpool and has played a big part in them getting, Salah, Mane, Firmino, Van Dijk, Robertson, Allisson, Jota, and Diaz.

Spurs on the other hand had Steve (Give my head peace) Hitchen.

In other words the squad is simply not good enough. You cannot make a silk purse out of a cows ear. The worry is that despite Conte arriving and Paratici arriving we still end up with a zero net spend transfer window in January. We lost our principle targets in Traore and Diaz because we delayed and low balled on the offers whilst we attempted to offload players in order to use that money for new acquisitions, There was no ambition for new investment. It is always selling to buy and as a result other clubs know this and as a result we struggle to offload any player at the value ENIC want. Conte looks broken. He knows that the club did not back him in January. Bentancur and Kulu were a panic move after the Traore and Diaz deals collapsed. Paratici went back to his old club and took in some players Juve wanted off their wage bill as they took away another one of our other main targets in Dusan Vlahovic. The January transfer window confirmed that ENIC and Levy have not changed their modus operandi and sadly Conte is now aware of that.?
