Lucrative Contract Offer For Mediocre 26-Year-Old Would Be A Tragic Waste Of Money | opinion

By Joe Fish -

Tottenham are reportedly preparing to offer Bournemouth winger Ryan Fraser a lucrative contract for him to join the club next season.

Football Insider understands that the 26-year-old winger has become one of Jose Mourinho’s top targets for a summer when he is likely to be reduced to free transfers, loans and swap deals because of the Covid-19 crisis.

Fraser is out of contract at Bournemouth at the end of this season and apparently has several other Premier League suitors, which is why Spurs are said to be keen to table an attractive offer and get a deal agreed early.

This would sound like a sensible business plan if the player we were talking about isn’t coming off the back of a one goal and four assist campaign.

The Scotland international racked up seven goals and 14 assists in the league last season, but has been hugely disappointing this year and would be a waste of wages when we don’t have much money going spare.

I’d place Fraser as fourth choice on the flanks at Spurs, behind Son Heung-min, Lucas Moura and Steven Bergwijn, so I don’t think we need him.

And if we do sign him on a big-money contract, we might find him difficult to shift if, as I suspect, he’s not top-six material, leaving us with a hefty wage packet to pick up and partially nullifying the lack of fee paid to get him.

This virus has played into Levy/ENICS hands. One might even think they had something to do with it. Yet more bargain basement dross pulling on our shirt

He had one great season where he was runner up to Eden Hazard in assists, followed by a poor season perhaps caused by the pressure of being linked to to top six clubs. Might be worth a punt.

As others have mentioned,an attacking player is not what we desparately need.He may be free, but so are other players in positions that we need to address.
If Bournemouth are relegated, then I would go for Ake and King as backup for Kane. That of course would mean spending money so is a nonstarter.

Levy would recoup all his wages if in a season or so he decided to sell him.He must be worth £10m in today’s market. Anybody but Willian.🙏
