“likely to land both” – Journalist makes big transfer claim ahead of January transfer window

By Mehdi Gokal -

According to journalist Dean Jones, Tottenham Hotspur want to add a defender and a forward to Antonio Conte’s squad in the January transfer window.

Despite going on a spending spree in the summer, spending over £140m on seven signings, Spurs are said to be looking to return to the market in January to sign a couple more players.

Everton and Brazil forward Richarlison, as well as Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Yves Bissouma, were arguably the club’s most high-profile signings, while Inter Milan and Croatia winger Ivan Perisic who arrived on a free transfer has also made a significant impact.

Spurs did however fail to address a couple of key areas including an attacking midfielder and a top-class centre-back. They were linked with a number of players in the summer but could not agree to a deal for their preferred targets leaving Conte dry in those departments.

However, it is now being reported by multiple journalists that Spurs will be dipping back into the market to address these areas.

Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge previously told GiveMeSport that the club could look to sign a right wing-back, center-back, and attacking midfield in January.

Fabrizio Romano has also recently confirmed that Spurs are looking at a new centre-back in January.

And now Dean Jones has suggested that the club is interested in both a defender and a forward, though he questions how the club will feel after Richarlison’s performance for Brazil at the World Cup, where he scored three goals in four matches.

He told GIVEMESPORT:

“I think a defender and forward are equally as likely to land, they need both and they want both. I do wonder how they come away from this World Cup from watching Richarlison, it has given them something to think about as they move forward.”

A new defender in January is claimed by all the above journalists with the likes of Bastoni and Stefan de Vrij linked with a move.

Conte appears to be looking for more reinforcements to add quality depth to his squad after securing their place in the Champions League knockout stages by finishing top of their group. The Italian now aims for a top-four finish at the very least, as well as progression in the Champions League knockout rounds and a run at the FA Cup.
