Wholly depressing stuff from Charlie Eccleshare for The Athletic today which regrettably sounds all too familiar. Par for the course. Plus ça change, eh?
The Millennial Tottenham fans amongst us will rationalize it though, fear not. In Levy, we trust. Advanced loser think capsules are freely available from reception.

Quite how these already tired looking negotiations progress is anyone’s business. It’s not unusual for internal discussions at Spurs to be prolonged, however, leaks happen for a reason. They occur in all walks of life, and are not unique to football. They are positive things, otherwise dark guano builds up.
£15,000 a week for a top flight Premier League player simply isn’t enough. If it is anything, it’s a poorly veiled effort to coerce the player in question to move along.
This is precisely the kind of no-good mucking about that perpetuates Tottenham’s bad name when it comes to looking after players.
Japhet has been with us since he was a child. What sort of arrogance might Levy have, to believe Tanganga will still respect this club? I’m at a loss.

We should pay him what he deserves. I have no idea if £15k a week is appropriate for a teenager with a handful of first team games to his name. it sounds a lot to me but I don’t know what the going rate is for a player in his position.
What I am confident in saying is that a good way to handle it is give home something towards what he wants but with the promise of a review this time next season if he carries on his impressive development.
What really concerns me about Levy is he seems unable to learn from his mistakes, instead he just goes on repeating them. What does he have between his ears money instead of a brain?
Maybe they’re going to hold down the wages for any academy players making the first team and any new players who are signed. Though if other teams are paying more then you have a problem.
Its obvious he’s worth more than £15k per week already. Why risk losing him when we will only have to replace him with somebody for 3 times those wages. £15k a week wouldn’t get you a decent Championship player.
In November McTominay at United was reported to be on £10,000 a week He has since established himself in the first team and probably is on more money now. Japhet hasn’t had the opportunity to establish himself as a first team player and that is part of the problem. I’d imagine there is a rising scale where the more you play in the first team the more your wages increase. The average weekly wage for Sheffield United and Norwich coming up from the Championship wouldn’t be much more than the twenty thousand a week Japhet was offered. Though their wages have probably shot up now they’re in the Premier League.
This sounds like a joke. Does anyone have a ball park figure for what would be a fair offer (I have no idea) £20k/£30K?
loooooon!
It’s absolutely despicable from Levy to offer such a low amount for a Premier League player. We really need to get rid of Levy, Lewis and ENIC, they’re doing great things off the pitch but on it where all the fans are concerned they are only holding this club back, we’ll never win anything with them in charge. It’s TIME TO GO !!
Don’t give them youts too much too soon.
Japhet strikes me as mature and level headed. Being paid what he is worth is not going to spoil him. I think this is just meanness dressed up as caring for the player when all they care about is their own bank balances. There’ll be no shortage of other clubs willing to pay Japhet the going rate.
He’s twenty one years old not some seventeen year old.
