Latest: Fabrizio Romano confirms ‘Spurs were interested’ in £105,000 a week Barca star – will renew interest in January

Spurs are set to compete with Unai Emery’s Aston Villa for Barcelona midfielder Franck Kessie, having renewed their interest in the Ivorian.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Tottenham will look to sign the midfielder in January, as Barcelona appears willing to offload the midfielder just months after signing him on a free transfer from AC Milan.

The report claims that a number of clubs are interested in signing the 25-year-old, including Villa, Fulham, and Inter Milan. And Spurs have become the latest club to join the race for the Barcelona outcast.

According to the report, Barcelona will be content on keeping Kessie if no offers come in for the midfielder in January. However, with big clubs showing interest, the Catalan giants may be tempted cash in on him.

Kessie is one of Barcelona’s highest earners, with a reported weekly wage of £105,000, and given the club’s financial problems, it’s easy to see why the La Liga side might be willing to sell him off and Spurs have come up as an ideal candidate.

Kessie was heavily linked with Spurs before he signed for Barcelona. According to Fabrizio Romano, who wrote in his column for CaughtOffside that Spurs were interested in Kessie over the summer, but Antonio Conte’s team did not formalise their interest.

However, this time around it will be Unai Emery who will reportedly give stiff competition to the North London club for his signature.

In 223 appearances for Stefano Pioli’s side, the Ivory Coast international scored 37 goals and made 16 assists, including six in the Scudetto-winning 2021-22 season.
