Journalist reveals Jose Mourinho and Tottenham players position on qualifying for Europa League

By Bruce Grove -

It has to be said that not everyone is enamoured at the idea of playing Europa League football next season. There are some fans that want the club to miss out so they can concentrate on the Premier League next season and some that want European football no matter what competition it is.

What is not known is how Jose Mourinho and the players feel about the competition, it is a massive drop down from the Champions League that is for sure.

Well, The Athletic journalist Charles Eccleshare, who covers Tottenham for the website, was asked the following question in a live blog last night, Are we playing to avoid the Europa league? and this is how he responded,

“Europa League money is really important. And so as much as fans might not want it, it would be really bad news if Spurs didn’t qualify. Player-wise, it’s generally seen as better than nothing to be in the EL, and Mourinho definitely wants to qualify”

Eccleshare is obviously 100% correct, Mourinho would love to qualify, he loves winning competitions, the more the merrier, the club does need the money even if it is a shadow of what can be earned in the Champions League and players by their very nature are competitive and in my opinion, would also love to partake in the Europa League.

It should also not be forgotten that the Europa League is more than just a trophy, it is another route into the Champions League and the way things are going right now it may well represent our best chance of achieving that next season.

Whether Tottenham can qualify is questionable but it does not mean they will not try right up until the last possible moment.

I am not fussed if we miss out of the EL, as it might just focus the players and Levy for that matter, to realise the importance of European football for this club. If we do qualify, as said Mourinho would go all out for it.

Europa League is full of good teams and teams that are out of the Champions Leagues, so I wouldn’t fancy having my house on the present team to win it. Maybe four or five top players coming in the summer might give us some hope.

The EL is another opportunity to watch Spurs play. Id rather watch Spurs of a Thursday than not at all. It will be a bit of a comedown from the CL but at least we know Jose will take it seriously unlike some of his predecessors. Its one we have a real chance of winning under Jose and could be our best route back into CL. Bring it on I say.

I’m sure the club have to make the right noises. Judging by the football we’re playing I’d say we’re playing to not make any kind of European football or any kind of decent league placing.

One might even dare to suggest this is a Mourinho ploy to get a bigger transfer kitty out of ol deep pockets

We are far from certain to qualify and in the same breath we’re winning it! I love the optimism. There is little prize or tv money in this cup, but full stadiums would help……would we fill a full stadium playing Albania’s finest KF Tirana on a Thursday night? Alcohol sales would be up, just to get us through the game!

I just share this for what it’s worth, I listened to Alasdair Gold on his Tottenham YouTube channel and he said that a source at Spurs told him that taking part in the Europa League had cost the club money they made no profit out of it. I found that hard to believe, what club would want to take part in a loss maker? But I also have a vague memory that some club I think it was Everton made a grand total of £800,000 out of their whole Europa League venture, that is for multiple matches not one game.
