Journalist confirms Premier League club made an ambitious call to former Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino

By Mehdi Gokal -

Everton made an ambitious call to Mauricio Pochettino last year as they plotted their next move after Frank Lampard, according to a report in Daily Mail.

The team had been struggling in the Premier League and the hierarchy at the club were looking for a way to turn things around.

Before the World Cup break, Everton suffered two defeats in the space of just a few days, both away to struggling Bournemouth.

The team conceded seven goals across the two games, which will have understandably concerned the hierarchy at the club.

In light of these struggles, Everton decided to stick with Lampard, but it became clear that things were not improving. After the defeat to West Ham, the club ultimately decided to part ways with Lampard and began their search for a new manager.

However, during the World Cup, Everton made an ambitious call to former Tottenham and PSG manager Pochettino to assess whether he’d be interested in taking over from Lampard, according to the Daily Mail.

It’s not surprising that Pochettino was not interested in the job.

With Everton currently in the relegation zone of the Premier League, it wasn’t an attractive position for a manager who has recently managed top teams like PSG and Tottenham.

Additionally, Pochettino would have been aware of the fan unrest and financial struggles that Everton have been facing, which would have further deterred him from taking the job.

Attracting this caliber of manager won’t be easy for Everton due to multiple reasons. Their league position, fan unrest, and financial struggles mean it’s not the most attractive job to come into.

It’s a difficult situation for Everton, but the club will need to find a way to attract a quality manager if they want to improve their performance in the league.

This will come as good news for Spurs fans as Pochettino continues to be linked with a return to Tottenham with Antonio Conte’s future remaining uncertain.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Conte leaving a big possibility and according to Italian journalist Marco Conterio, Tottenham are ‘already working’ and that ‘talks have already begun’ with Pochettino about a potential return to the club.

If Conte is to leave, Spurs fans will be delighted to have the Argentinan return as replacement.
