José Mourinho’s Tactics And What I Believe Occasionally Goes Wrong

Tifo has a new video out and this one will be of particular interest to fans wanting to gain an insight into Mourinho’s tactics. The white noise, anti-thinkers will undoubtedly be quick to point out the negatives, but they might have to choose their words carefully as Brendan Rodgers employs the same system at Leicester City.

To me, it appears obvious that this system’s inherent flaw is that if a player is not mentally and physically on top of his game, then there are ample opportunities for error.

In particular, it strikes me that if Tottenham had certain players were to be either physically incapable (like Gareth Bale) or mentally reluctant (like Dele Alli) then, any coach would find themselves beyond frustrated.

Tactical periodization strikes me it would also ideally suit a coach that was able to have as close to complete control over his squad personnel as possible in order to avoid anyone that wasn’t completely on-board with the project.

No that season we should have won it. We were top for ages.. All the top clubs were struggling. Kane on fire, the best back four, a decent midfield with Dembele finally playing regularly… Tintin Dele and others bottled it against weaker teams like the Toon. It was between us and the Foxes at the end, we bottled it badly, hence the infamous coming 3rd in the 2 horse race…. The next season we sold Walker to City. Plus City spent nearly half a billion on their defence alone. They ran away with the league as soon as Pep did that. We had no chance the next season especially selling Bonzo to them on top of their spending….

Rather unfair
I find Gold informative although he admits his opinions are as a journo rather than a fan
He’s definitely not a fan of DL’s on the field activities

The academy will make up a bigger chunk as I can see if we get rid of who we want, the squad might only be 22 or 23 players. Jose has already told us he expects academy players involved with the first team, just watch out for the 16/17 year olds.

Should we have won that title, we convert loses to draws not wins, the following season we should have done better and won it.

Alistair ‘get those teeth fixed’ Gold waffles on youtube for almost an hour at a time. I know he gets to work close to the club, and must have insight and interesting stuff to say. But he waffles on far too much about nothing.. After 5 mins I always find I’m not listening anymore, just staring at those teeth, like when someone has a massive unnatural mole on the end of their nose… Maureen doesn’t like Gold after some of his sniping. Can tell from his reactions in the pressers.

Look up Benficas acadamy. They can. And do. Also selling loads for top profit. 100 million pound players from them.. We need benficas sporting director, their youth coaches and scouts.. Top class.

We should have won that title. We had a better team then for sure. Manager made strange decisions, refused to rotate properly, stuck with same tactics every game, late ineffective subs, and certain players like Tintin Dele and Davies clearly bottled it as soon as we hit squeaky bum time.. We came 3rd in a two horse race with the best defence in the league and the golden boot winner… We desperately needed a striker but Botch was berry appy and told us that Son could play up top! He can’t…… As for right now I would say there is not much between us. They are a more settled team, we are more in transition. Vardy is old now and coming to his end. Next season if we can get rid of alot of deadwood and bring in a few then we would steam ahead of them. Leicester have some good players but they’re not great.

just look at the league table.

Who last won the title? Who’s most likely to be in the Champions League next season?

I’m afraid if you look at where both teams are these days, they are better than us. Unless League titles and points gained are no longer relevant…

Seems to make sense on a one-match-a-week principle. How that works on a two to three match in a seven-day cycle would be interesting. Does not explain how we can start so many matches without any desire or energy though? I suspect the players have lost the plot and their natural instincts( leave Dier, Winks, Davies, Sissoko, Aurier, and Docherty out of that statement)and instead of playing they are overthinking

Jose doesn’t strike me as a guy who would, with all his experience, make his explanations too difficult and technical for players. I don’t think Madrid, Chelsea or Inter had genius players who could understand layer upon layer of tactics…

Highest prices in the world or London prices? £110.000 a day council tax. “No hope of competing at the top level? Nonsense. The Muppets are those who don’t understand how much money will be coming in from the new stadium. Clearly

Levy has done his work well. Convincing football fans to pay the highest prices in world football helping to service a world record debt and with literally no hope of competing at the top level. We have a plethora of muppets in our fan base, clearly.

By Holtby, do you mean our “best buy of the century”? 😂🤦‍♂️

Unfortunately we’re the suckers in question too often. N’Jie, N’Koudou, Stambouli, Chiriches, Paulinho, Wimmer, Pienaar, Janssen, the three you mentioned…we bought them first and then had to flog them, often at a loss. Shame most of our scouting isn’t worth a damn.

The best way to to break down that defence is to have a winger capable of getting round the back and pulling the ball back so the advantage is back with the attacking side.

Used to watch Bill Nicholson hold up play for quite lengthy periods discussing tactical stuff on the training pitches at Brookfield Lane. So nothing really new in this topic, its just how deep you go which can be the problem for the players.

One wonders whether the primary superiority of the current top 4 squads over our squad is purely intellectual rather than about physical skills.
Then again, we had the best defence in Europe with Walkies & Rosy making up 50% of the back line so, perhaps not.

Having four modes of play is not too difficult though, or is it? Even players surely know counter attacking is different to attacking an organised defence and defending in an organised block is not the same as sprinting back to prevent a break.

Going forward fast was where we excelled often under Poch, while we tended to struggle against “bus parkers” where we had to break down 11 men behind the ball. Surely it makes sense to coach these situations equally?

No, neither do I expect anyone to queue up for them. Dier and Winks are a busted flush and Dele just MIGHT have some suitors, if he really is such a marvelous talent who just needs to play regularly, and doesn’t under big bad Jose for seemingly no reason.

If Levy is serious about doing at least some business to improve us, he’ll flog them ASAP and use the funds to get us a CB and CM. That’s about the extent of my hopes.

Levy held on to the the credit balances ( re 2019/20) in each season ticket account as a deposit for this season/next (20/21) Mine was approx £200. Maybe 40,000 in total did this or paid a deposit (if not in credit). Time to shake us client references down for some for capital?

Interesting video and in my opinion explains why our performances have been all over the place this season.

Now I’m sure managers adopting this approach simplify it for the players but there is such a thing as over complicating matters.

Golf is the prime example where over theorizing can destroy your game over thinking inhibits natural ability.

For the above to work its essential you have talented players and this usually equates to intelligent players.

I simply do not feel we have the required pool of players to carry out those instructions on a consistent basis.

Imagine a manager getting the players he wants eh? If Levy paid the wages for Jose to come then he should accommodate the man.

This is not on that topic but I had to cos it hilariously shows the delusion among ENIC fc cultists. A comment i stumbled across from a Spurs fan responding to some Chelsea mug who was ribbing him about how much debt THFC are in and they won’t be paying it off for 20 years at least and STILL won nothing. This is the Spurs fan response…

“Sell Kane, 100/150 mill, talk of Amazon/nike naming rights to stadium 250 mill, New deal with cinch/ticketmaster/NFL rugby and boxing, concerts returning, make that 10 not 20 years, the tin pots may not be rolling in right now but Spurs are a very well run club ??!!

Oh my…

So you’re telling me Jose’s training is NOT just about parking 11 players in our defensive third?! 😂

This approach is probably at odds with a lot of things Poch taught the players, and as they learned his way young, some now struggle (or just don’t want) to adapt, even when the old ways stopped working years ago.

I remember our players either running around like Duracell bunnies on coke for 90 minutes or looking absolutely shot in games, and there were posts here suggesting they were being overworked on the training pitch. This approach seems much more reasonable, also given how many games Kane, Son and others had to play over the past few years.

Incidentally, quite a few journalists are hopping on the “Spurs summer overhaul” bandwagon – so might there be truth in that? Is Levy throwing caution to the wind and are we to expect a new Kane contract and substantial churn? 🤔
