James Maddison has revealed he pulled aside Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall to give them a special message after Tottenham’s win over Hoffenheim.

Spurs won 3-2 in Germany on Thursday to get their Europa League campaign back on track, with Maddison opening the scoring after three minutes and Son Heung-min netting twice.

The Lilywhites are now sixth in the Europa League table with just one more league phase match to go, almost assured of a place in the round of 16.

Due to their chronic injury crisis, Spurs were once again forced to play 18-year-olds Gray and Bergvall for the full 90 minutes at the PreZero Arena.

Playing at left-back, Gray was excellent once again, completing 94% of his passes and two of his five dribbles, while making two tackles, two blocks, four clearances, two interceptions and one recovery.

Bergvall, meanwhile, was dynamic in midfield again, completing both his attempted dribbles and winning more duels (9) than any other player on the pitch, while making five tackles, one block and one recovery.

It’s not the first time either summer arrival has caught the eye this season and Maddison has revealed the special praise he gave the teenage talents in the dressing room after beating Hoffenheim.

“We have got two 18-year-olds in Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall just churning out 90 minutes after 90 minutes,  because of the injury situation we’re in, which I don’t want to keep blabbing on about but it is real at the minute, it is happening, we do have about 11 fit senior players,” Maddison said after Thursday’s match (via TBR).

He added: “And they are being asked to do so much. In the end, Lucas chasing down the keeper in the 93rd minute when he is dead on his feet, Archie winning duels in the bottom corner, stopping crosses coming in.

“We’re asking so much of them. I said to them both in there, I’m just really proud of them.”
