It’s Time To Trust Troy: What’s The Worst That Could Happen? [opinion]

By Joe Fish -

Watching the likes of Eddie Nketiah, Gabriel Martinelli and Mason Greenwood score Premier League goals of late has made me wonder – what’s the worst that could happen by playing Troy Parrott?

As The Irish Independent details, Jose Mourinho has continually said that the 18-year-old is not ready to play in Tottenham’s first team, where there is an opening for him following injuries to Harry Kane and Son Heung-min.

But what have we got to lose by finding out?

We don’t look like scoring since Son’s injury. We barely laid a glove on RB Leipzig and Chelsea across 180 minutes. Yes we did score against the latter, but it was a flukey own goal, through little of our own doing.

Parrott might not be ready for the physical rigours of the Premier League. He might not be ready for the pressures of leading the Spurs line, and of course he isn’t ready to fill the gaping void created by Kane’s absence.

But he knows where the goal is – scoring 30 times in 38 games for our youth teams, u18 and above. And we need people who know where the goal is.

I’m not talking about the teenager starting every game, but certainly being part of the matchday squad and getting regular minutes from the bench.

If he makes an impact, brilliant. If he doesn’t, so what? Is it going to damage his confidence? No more than not getting picked in a strikerless squad.

If kids are doing it elsewhere at top clubs, then Troy can do it for us.

This is all very well if the lad is ready. If he isn’t whats the worst that could happen? We ruin the lads career. Poch wouldn’t play him either ‘for fear of damaging his development’… Maureen is clearly looking after the boy.

The situation now is that Mourinho has to reverse his stubbornness and I don’t see that happening unfortunately.I agree, what is to lose.
