“It’s inappropriate” Henry Winter Joins The Daniel Levy Pile On

By Ron Carne -

Tottenham have received a backlash after they confirmed that they would use the government’s furlough scheme for non-playing staff.

As confirmed in a statement from chairman Daniel Levy, the decision was taken to protect the jobs of the 550 individuals in question by using the scheme whereby the government pays 80% of their wages, while it would mean a 20% wage cut.

Employers have the option to pay that remaining 20% if they so wish, but as per the statement above, Levy confirmed that wages would be reduced.

In turn, respected journalist Henry Winter has written on the issue in his latest column for The Times, and he has criticised Spurs for the decision that they’ve taken to use the scheme when it’s more suited to those in more immediate need.

“It’s inappropriate. The elite should not be a drain on the exchequer,” he noted. “Where Rishi Sunak’s furlough scheme should legitimately be accessed by football is for clubs lower down the pyramid enduring the cash-flow crisis without gate receipts, not by the likes of Spurs and Newcastle United, who have also placed staff on furlough. Others are considering it.”

Levy specifically mentions in his statement that Spurs will “continue to review this position” in regard to the furlough scheme, and so it remains to be seen if the backlash from journalists and fans alike forces the club into a rethink in May.

For now though, with Newcastle United also making a similar decision, it has led to the two Premier League outfits facing significant criticism such as that seen from Winter above with others pointing out that a reduction in player wages to subsidise the non-playing staff would be a more appropriate solution.

This is so welcome – the more negative publicity the better. There was a lot of discussion on this topic on TalkSport this morning; Brazil. McCoist, Parlour, Matt Lowton from The Times all putting the boot in. What a PR disaster. And as for his £3m bonus for delivering the stadium. If he had any decency he would have waived this – I’m sure that would have paid the non-playing staff salaries for this period. Anyway in what other business would you get rewarded for delivering a project 70% over budget and schedule? This sort of performance deserves nothing but the sack.

Being highlighted on main BBC news, which will undoubtedly antagonise Levy even more after previous upsets, maybe a ban for them is likely from the megalomaniac .

Juventus players have waived their wages for four months, meanwhile in The Premier League, silence. Kudos to that humanitarian leader of the PFA who refuses to contemplate wage cuts.

There is no more ‘Football Club’ Lads. THFC once had Class, but we are now just a laughing stock . The Butt of jokes and an easy target , we all know who is to blame, but for years the Supporters , by being Sheep have been complicit.

I guess the bald midget and Fat Mike want to make sure they can never show their faces in public again for risk of being beaten to death at the hands of a mob. I won’t shed a single tear if both of them are strung up by the lamposts or ripped limb from limb by a baying mob of desperate people.

Thank you, just finished watching it. I had forgotten about Maradona. I can think about a lot of other players we failed to sign. Levy must have a dummy fax machine installed in his office.

On a happier note, per the Guardian Tottenham Medical staff have joined the NHS. We are in your debt.

My mate and his son have season tickets, but due to the travel time can’t always make the games, and sell their tickets back to the club. While we were in leipzig a deadline passed that meant that the 1300 quid they were owed could not now be reclaimed, with no email to advise this was the case either and as the club is shut he can’t get through to speak to anyone to resolve the issue. He has no intention of renewing nxt season, so the idea it’s gonna go to towards that is a non runner, and you can see him having to fight tooth and nail for every last penny, with no guarantee he’ll recover this money. I think the way the vermin has gone about this whole situation speaks volumes about what kind of pond life we have running our club. The fact that so many clubs that don’t do as well as us can still pay their staff, and we can’t is nothing short of a complete embarrassing shambles. The fact that journos like winter, haywood and Samuel’s are all lining up to have a go at him now can only be a good thing for our club. Let’s get everyone together and rid the club of these parasites once and for all

Is anyone surprised? Effectively one of Britain’s richest men, Lewis, plus Levy, a billionaire in his own right, have used government funding to subsidized their entire wage bill and docked their staff the 20% the government scheme wouldn’t cover.

I somewhat doubt, when the scheme was unveiled, that Tottenham Hotspur football club was the first business the government might have thought of, in dispensing such financial largesse at the taxpayer’s expense.

Exploiting any conceivable avenue for financial gain, however amoral or distasteful, regrettably is par for the course for our diminutive supremo however. It wouldn’t surprise me if the player’s wages were covered by club insurance policies!

The club that is consistently the most profitable in the PL is one of the first to ask for government bailout to save a few quid, in the process, docking 20% off the lowest earners at the club. It is truly shameful. At least Levy is docking his own wage.

Is it not enough for Levy that every single PL chairman and most of their equivalents in Europe loathe dealing with him, now we have become a despised team by all and sundry due to his disgraceful behaviour. It was interesting to read today that Guillem Balague flatly contradicted the story in the Mirror that it was Poch who did not want Coutinho. Instead, he confirmed that it was Levy who moved the goalposts at the last moment. A familiar story, I suspect, in his transfer dealings with other clubs. I suppose it would be naïve of me to deduce this is the reason that so few of our targets are ever attained. Resign Levy, you are a toxic influence on our club , and you and your boss will become the most hated custodians of THFC of all time.

We have been placid but in the last 10 years or so we have seen some good teams and some great players. If we had been struggling in the bottom half / third then Im sure it would have been a different story

The vulture capitalist is completely unconscionable and will automatically appear whenever easy pickings seem to be on offer, no matter how undignified or callous it makes them look. In levy’s case you’d have thought the recent sting of the Grealish debacle (bidding 4m for a 6m rated player) would have given him some pause before another attempted grab. But it’s quite clear now he is far beyond reach and just acts instinctively.

Well let’s try and get them out then. No owners want continuous bad publicity, especially Spurs who want and need the big sponsors. Perhaps for too long now us Spurs fans have been too apathetic.

Finally, finally, people can now see what we have been banging on about for years.

This little parasite has truly shown his real colours. Not even his smooth talking will get him out of this one.

Ever since He crawled, like a cockroach, under the door into our club He has emitted a constant stream of excuses as to why we cannot buy the top players (who are needed to win silverware). I wont bore you with the list but the latest and you could see it coming a mile away, the corona virus.

And by ruthlessly taking advantage of the Government’s aid to employers in one glorious swoop this new strain of the COVID-19 virus has made us, Spurs, public enemy number one.
