Tottenham Hotspur attacker Son Heung-min will likely stay at the club for another season.
According to Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, it looks increasingly likely that Spurs will trigger the extension clause in the South Korean international’s contract and he will stay with the club until 2026.
Plettenberg has revealed on X that it’s almost decided that the 32-year-old winger will stay at the North London club, and the player is also keen on the extension.
He wrote: “It looks increasingly likely that Son Heung-min will stay at Tottenham for another year, with Spurs expected to trigger the clause that extends his contract until 2026. It’s almost decided. The 32 y/o world-class winger also wants to remain at Tottenham.”
Son has been an exceptional player for Tottenham since joining the club, and the extension will come as a boost for the club. Even though he is 32, he could still contribute at a high level for them. In addition to that, his leadership qualities and experience could prove to be invaluable for Tottenham.
They will look to compete for major trophies and they could use his experience and mentality. Furthermore, losing a player of his quality on a free transfer for next summer would have been a devastating blow.
It will be interesting to see if Tottenham can plan his succession carefully and replace him adequately in the coming months. They need a dynamic forward who can slot into the role of a centre forward as well as a wide forward. Son has been a complete player for Tottenham and his ability to score goals consistently and create opportunities for his teammates make him a unique asset.
There is no doubt that the South Korean is one of the best players in the Premier League and he has been operating at a world-class level for several seasons. Even though he has shown signs of decline in recent months, he could still be a very useful option to have. It remains to be seen whether he can help Spurs end their wait for a trophy.
