Tottenham Hotspur attacker Son Heung-min will be a free agent at the end of the season, but the North London club are not prepared to let him leave yet.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham are prepared to activate the clause in his contract, which will see his deal expire in the summer of 2026 instead. According to the Italian journalist, the process has already started and it remains to be seen whether the two parties can get the deal done.

Romano wrote on X: “Tottenham have started the process to activate the clause to extend Heung-min Son’s contract until June 2026. At least one more season for Son at Spurs, this is the plan of the club”.

Son has been a key player for Tottenham since joining the club and it makes sense to hold onto him for now. Even though he is in his 30s, he could still be a very valuable member of the squad. Tottenham will need his experience and quality in the final third, and the South Korean will hope to help his side win a trophy soon.

The 32-year-old currently earns £190,000 a week and the one-year extension will not come with a pay rise. There have been rumours of a longer deal in recent months and it remains to be seen how the situation unfolds.

Tottenham are probably not keen on offering him a long-term contract given his age, and it will be interesting to see how the player reacts to that. He has been an incredible performer for Tottenham since joining the club, and this could be his final opportunity to bag a lucrative contract.

The player has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia as well, and they might be able to offer him more money compared to Tottenham.
