According to transfer insider Dean Jones, new Tottenham Hotspur signing Djed Spence will find it ‘tough’ to break into Antonio Conte’s preferred starting XI and may even seek a loan move in January.
The right-back has failed to make an immediate impression on Conte since arriving at Hotspur Way, with the Italian previously admitting that the former Nottingham Forest man was not a signing he wanted.
He has only played one minute in any competition so far, and he has been left out of Tottenham’s squad for half of their Premier League matches this season.
And Jones believes Spence will struggle to break into Spurs’ starting XI and believes a January loan move could be an option for the youngster.
He told GIVEMSPORT:
“If Djed Spence is going to break through, he’s got to earn it.
“It might be the Carabao Cup is his platform but, ultimately, I think this season’s going to be a tough one for him to make a name for himself in that Tottenham team.
“It might even be that he has loan enquiries when we get to January.”
Spence is one of the most rated young full-backs in the country and in fact, Arsenal legend Ian Wright has compared him with the likes of Reece James and Trent Alexander Arnold. After Arsenal’s surprise defeat to Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup last year, Wright said:
“If we are talking about right-backs performing at an unbelievable level, we’re talking Reece James and Trent (Alexander-Arnold).”
“But I have not seen a combative, technical, swashbuckling performance like that for a very long time.”
