“initiated contact” – Italian giants in talks with Tottenham to sign star player

By Mehdi Gokal -

AS Roma manager, Jose Mourinho, is reportedly keen on signing Eric Dier from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer transfer window.

According to Italian news website Romagiallorossa.it, the Italian club has already “initiated contact
with Spurs for the 29-year-old center-back.

Dier, who joined Tottenham from Sporting Lisbon in 2014, has made 355 appearances for the club and has 13 goals and 12 assists. While he began his career as a defensive midfielder, he has since been converted to a center-back.

The report suggests that the good relationship between Roma and Tottenham makes the transfer likely. However, any potential deal will depend on whether Roma qualifies for the Champions League next season, either through a top-four finish in Serie A or winning the Europa League this season.

Tottenham are currently looking for a new manager after sacking Antonio Conte last week. The sacking came after his public outburst aimed at his players and the club hierarchy.

Dier’s contract with Spurs expires in 2024, and it remains to be seen whether the new Spurs manager, who will be appointed in the summer, sees the defender as a key part of his plans for the team.

Meanwhile, Spurs themselves are fighting to secure a top-four finish in the Premier League this season. Currently in fourth place with two more games played than their rivals, they are level on points with third-place Newcastle United and fifth-place Manchester United.

Mourinho, who previously managed Tottenham before being sacked in April 2021, is “increasingly convinced” to continue at AS Roma next season and the Italian club reportedly plans on financially backing him in the summer transfer window.
