“I’m told…” – Romano confirms “internal discussions” have taken place – shares latest on Spurs’ managerial target

By Mehdi Gokal -

Tottenham Hotspur have been in the hunt for a new manager following Conte’s sacking last week.

They have been strongly linked with the likes of Mauricio Pochettino and Julian Nagelsmann recently. And according to Fabrizio Romano, Spurs have had some internal discussions about appointing Julian Nagelsmann, who was recently sacked by Bayern Munich.

Romano clarified that there has been no formal proposal made to Nagelsmann as yet, and the situation at Tottenham is not likely to be resolved soon. The journalist also revealed that Nagelsmann is just one of the many candidates Spurs are considering. Daniel Levy, the club’s chairman, has a long list of potential managers that he is considering for the job.

Speaking on the House of Champions YouTube channel, Romano said that while Nagelsmann was one of the names under consideration, Tottenham was not close to appointing him. The club has five or six candidates for the position, and Levy hopes to make a decision in the coming weeks.

He said (3:33 onwards):

“Honestly it’s true that Tottenham have had some internal discussion about Nagelsmann. I am not aware of any proposal to Nagelsmann, I’m not aware of anything that has been passed between them at this stage.”

“I’m sure that they weren’t that close to appointment Nagelsmann. I’m told it was not that advanced. Let’s see with Tottenham what’s going to happen because Nagelsmann was one of the names. I’m sure they have a long list with many candidates, they have five or six candidates to get the job.

“Daniel Levy wants to decide in the next weeks. I’m sure it’s going to take some time to decide who is going to get the Tottenham job, it’s not something that is going to be resolved in a few days or weeks. It will take time.”

The news of Spurs’ interest in Nagelsmann is likely to excite fans, who have been waiting patiently for news on the club’s new manager.

Nagelsmann is one of the most highly regarded young coaches in the game, and his recent successes with RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich have made him a hot commodity.

They are not the only club interested in him. Chelsea, who sacked Graham Potter last night are also very much keen on the German.

Another potential candidate who has very recently become available is Brendan Rodgers. He is someone Daniel Levy has long admired and has tried to appoint twice in the last 10 years.

And a dream return of Mauricio Pochettino is not ruled out either. The Argentine is open to the move and Daniel Levy was also said to be personally interested in bringing him back but recent reports suggest he has had a change of heart regarding Pochettino.

It remains to be seen who will ultimately be appointed to the position, but Levy’s long list of candidates suggests that he is leaving no stone unturned in his pursuit of the right man for the job.
