If you thought we had seen the back of Ryan Mason, think again

By Bruce Grove -

It is doubtful that there are many Spurs fans out there that can be shocked anymore by what decision the club makes next, or so I thought.

I reckon that the latest Tottenham piece from the Express will have raised a few eyebrows for sure.

The tabloid is reporting that Spurs have put Ryan Mason on standby. Now think about that for a minute.

It tells us that Daniel Levy is not at all confident that he will have a new man in place by the time pre season kicks off.

There is no point sounding off about how farcical all this is, we already know that but the prospect of Mason overseeing pre-season training was not in the thinking of most fans when last season concluded.

There are levels of ridiculousness and Levy is climbing them with consummate ease, or should that be descending. Either way, this latest news is just depressing and truth be told, it is hard to find the energy to be outraged.

Nothing against Mason, this is not his fault, this is not on him, he should never be in this position and that is on Levy and the board.

Maybe Levy is hoping for some form of fatigued acceptance from the fans, I really do not know, I have no idea what goes through that man’s mind but the stadium will probably be full come the start of next season and I have no doubt that the fans will make their feelings known.

That would be awful for the players and Mason, if he is back in charge, and highly likely to undermine the start to the season in a significant way, especially considering our opening six games.

Now, the Express article does state that Mason and his team are on standby to take pre-season training only and not to actually be in the dugout for the first match of the season, however, there is nothing to suggest that a new manager will be hired in time to actually take charge of the opening games.

If the club cannot hire a new man in three months, what confidence would there be that they could then achieve that in another month?

Levy hasn’t just taken his eye off the ball, he’s blindfolded himself. Is there a bigger imbecile in world football now I wonder? Until quite recently just a few of us knowledgeable fans knew this fact, now the whole world and his brother know it. Well done Daniel you’ve hanged yourself by your own petard.

He’s just proved that he doesn’t pick the players on merit but picks his mates though hasn’t he? I don’t care about the manager being an ex Spurs player either, that’s irrelevant.

I wouldn’t be against giving Mason a go’ rather then some of the names thrown out there. Ryan knows the club, knows what the fans want, as long as he picks the players on merit and not just play his mates. Give it to him for a year, clear out the dead wood let our new director buy exciting players with his connections.

Oh Daniel finally found someone willing to ruin his resume?
If Mason had any sense he would be packing now.
Looks like any transfers before the preseason start are very unlikely.
That is unless Mason is picking them. You have to admire his courage being willing to sit and bleed on that throne of poisoned daggers (sorry! GOT).

The obvious conclusion to this story tells me that Levy is waiting for Martinez or Southgate to end their national managerial careers at the Euros to take up the poison chalice at Spurs.

Not being able to bring in a manager for over 60 days is strange to say the least unless of course it was always deliberate. Said it before, this exercise is all about managing expectations-DOWN. Curiously enough that could well be where we’re going.

IF, this is the current state of affairs it would be seen by anyone who expresses an opinion that could only be described as pitiful.
Should Mason be offered the opportunity I seriously hope he considers the situation in full, and realise that at this stage of his career he should decline such an offer in the best interests of himself and the club.

Even Levy now realises that no top manager wants to work with him and at the club. Levy and co are seriously tainting the club. The only solution is a new board and chairman. But that ain’t gonna happen anytime soon.

Mason leading pre-season, and possibility going into next season as manager would be a failing on Levy’s part. It’s not really the precocious young manager many of us would hope for!

But as you say… nothing against Mason, this is not his fault, this is not on him, he should never be in this position and that is on Levy and the board.

Two years of vanity have brought us from the champions league final to this. A CEO can’t be allowed to put emotion over forward planning, but that’s what’s repeatedly happened over the last 2 years.

It is ridiculous, totally pathetic in fact. But yes, totally agree. Do not blame Mason. Just another who may see his coaching career collapse. And yes, it all lies at the feet of Dearest Danny, who I am shocked to hear does not love me anymore.
