Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has jokingly suggested that Tottenham striker Harry Kane is being held a prisoner at his own club.
Kane has been heavily linked with a move away from Spurs this summer, with Bayern Munich reportedly leading the race to sign him.
It’s been rumored that Kane has already agreed to join the German side, and now it’s up to the two clubs to agree on a transfer fee.
Bayern Munich have already had two bids rejected for the prolific striker, worth £60 million and £70 million, respectively. The club is expected to return with an improved offer, hoping that Kane will also push for the move to exert pressure on Spurs to agree on a fee.
Tottenham initially set a price tag of £100 million on their prized asset to ward off interest from clubs, including Manchester United, who eventually withdrew their interest due to the high asking price.
PSG also entered the race for Kane but reports suggest that the player himself has ruled out a move to the French club.
Rooney, speaking about the ongoing transfer saga, jokingly referred to Kane as being held as a “prisoner” at Tottenham.
The Manchester United legend believes that Kane would be an ideal player for his former club and that he would love to see him in a United shirt.
Furthermore, Rooney mentioned that Kane knows he needs to win trophies, and to achieve that, he may need to leave Tottenham. Kane had considered a move last season but ultimately stayed with Spurs. He believes that the time is right for Kane to move on, and the striker appears ready for a new challenge.
He told The Athletic:
“Harry Kane would be the ideal player, for me, to go and join Manchester United.”
“It looks like he’s being held as a prisoner at Tottenham! It looks very difficult for him to get out of there.
“If Manchester United have Harry Kane, then that gives their chances of going to win, and compete, a lot easier. But where that happens, remains to be seen.”
“I thought it was time to go last season and he stayed.”
“Harry’s probably feeling that and knows there are trophies out there for him to win. He has done everything he can for that to try and be at Tottenham. Now probably is right for him to move on and it looks like he’s ready for that as well, but we know Tottenham can be quite difficult at times.”
Despite the transfer speculation, the situation remains complex as Tottenham is known for being tough negotiators. However, Kane’s desire for silverware may push the transfer forward in the coming weeks.
