“He’s too hands-on” Pundit tells Levy to take a backseat once Paratici arrives

By Bruce Grove -

Tottenham is closing in on confirming the appointment of Fabio Paratici as their director of football.

The Italian had tremendous success at Juventus and Spurs hope he can bring some of that and trophies to their club.

He is expected to be announced any moment from now and should be in charge of most things football at the club.

The spotlight has always been on Daniel Levy who runs Tottenham very well on the business side of things.

He is expected to hand everything football related over to Paratici, but former West Ham man turned pundit, Frank McAvennie, believes that Levy will struggle with relinquishing responsibilities to Paratici.

He urged the long-time Spurs supremo to focus on what he does best which is the business side of running the club and allow Paratici to handle the football side of things.

However, he admits that Levy is too hands-on to allow that to happen.

“Levy will still be pulling the strings,” McAvennie told Football Insider.

“He’s too hands-on. He’s great at running a football club but he’s no good at running a team.

“You have to let football people deal with the football. Some of these people would love to be managers.

“Levy will probably reckon he can do the job as a manager. But he can’t.

“You just run the club, give it to someone who knows what they are doing in football.”

Levy runs the business side of ENIC at the expense of THFC. ‘He’s expected to hand over everything football-related’ – do you really think that will happen?

I posted a couple of days ago that I had watched the under 21s Euro finals between Germany and Portugal which was a good game with the inevitable result. Germany were the more aggressive and physical and Portugal were technically vey able. I posed the question whether Hichen and our immense scouting staff had been sent to Slovenia to look for new young players. I reached the inevitable conclusion that it was unlikely although one could blame Covid.

Levy runs the business side of things very well does he? I think on closer inspection that statement may not be a true reflection.

Is he that great at running a FOOTBALL club? He’s perhaps fairly good at running an NFL stadium, entertainments venue etc

If Joe is the driving force here, and is sidelining Levy on football matters, that would be good. I’m not getting my hopes up though.

There is an interesting article on the BBC website naming 20 youngsters who could have an impact on the Euros.Paratici is probably aware of most, but I doubt Hitchens would have heard of any of them.

I know virtually nothing about Paratici, but after retiring from playing he spent 6 years as chief scout for Sampdoria and until this year was DOF at Juventus. That in itself should make him an experienced and well connected individual.

If he is in fact his own man his tenure with Spurs could be short and sweet if Levy doesn’t back off and leave him to get on with the job.At this stage of the recent laughable proceedings a football man must be able to deal with all things football.

I have a feeling, probably wrong, that Lewis has driven this change having seen his brand become a laughing stock recently.Anyone else who had overseen this comedy of errors by Levy would have been hounded out of a business, but blood is thicker than water I guess. We can only hope Levy will stay in the background and have minimal impact.

We’ll always be a business and never be a football club with Levy at the helm. We went 3 transfer windows with not buying anyone, just for a ponsy stadium. If I want to watch an American football match I’ll go to the states, if I want to watch a boxing match, I’ll go to Wembley and if I want to watch a pop concert I will go to the O2

Call me old fashioned but I just want to watch football at a football stadium. Even better if the owners were on the same page and properly support/invest in the team.
