Head To Head Last Seasons’ Numbers: Fonseca & Mourinho|image

By The Boy -

Is there much value to this graphic, or are we comparing apples with oranges? Certainly, those that held a default setting of contempt for José Mourinho determined that his past results were not to be taken a face value, their emphasis was on anything negative they might lay their hands upon.

However, these are nose-to-nose numbers and for a season which or Spurs that was mostly plagued with disappointment and frustration.

Maybe the world-class facilities will aid the man that one or two fans are already calling The Fonz.

His win rate at Tottenham was just about 50% and he never won anything like 7 games on the bounce so I really can’t see where you Rose coloured view of Jose comes from . In truth Mason had a better win ratio than Jose

& I agree with you!
But sadly, THFC are not Manchester City, Liverpool or Chelsea (nor Manchester United) & will never be able to FULLY compete with them whilst Mr. Levy/the board/ENIC stick to their 20 year ‘failure principles’

Oh don’t get me wrong I still hope we’ll do better, but confess I wanted Benitez over Poch. But that turned out better than I thought.

Definitely a good chance. Sacking Jose was a monumental mistake.

I actually believe we would have beaten Villa and Leeds as well if Jose stayed, which would have got us Champions League plus I think we would have sneaked the League Cup as well.

Fonseca spent close to £200m in the time Jose was at Spurs. just saying.

1) do not support the ENIC way – I was just saying that Jose does not fit it so would never ever work.
2) Success is substance over style, but its not mutually exclusive. The winner of the league the past 4 years has been the most attractive team (or at the least an attractive team) to watch. I watch football to enjoy it, if it was purely results i would simply catch the scores on BBC like I did half the time under Jose.

What THFC needs and what Levy wants are not aligned.

You’re not wrong.
Settling for mediocrity is what THFC (& some fans) do best, unfortunately.

IF all that has been reported about various managers turning THFC down &/or not wanting to join is true, do we not have to stop & think & ask ourselves why??
Lack of ambition &/or unwilling to invest by Mr. Levy/the board/ENIC seems to be a good place to start!?

We would likely have finished higher if Mourinho was left in charge we only faced one team higher than us in the last 6 games we had… the performance against Leeds was one of the worst all season

“Same manager, different players” as José said!

Not sure how any THFC fan could argue the players didn’t let him down & a few players have subsequently actually alluded to that.
Football seems to be the ONLY occupation where the underperforming staff can be excused

“….his style was not Tottelnham and his approach was not ENIC….”

Sorry, but that highlights exactly what is so fundamentally wrong with a BIG club acting as, thinking as & remaining a SMALL club.
Neither have served THFC positively in the last TWENTY years & for me, clinging onto a romantic notion of yesteryear is something THFC need to get a ‘decree absolute’ from, asap.
IF THFC are as you suspect, appointing a “stepping stone” manager, that’ll be another XX season(s) of nothingness, just to ‘suit the ENIC’ metric??
THFC do NOT need ANY manager that’ll ‘simply bend over & take it up the proverbial’ just to keep THFC ‘Spursy’ they need someone who can & will WIN & turn the squad into WINNERS.
Success IS substance over style any & every day of the week!

I get it might seem harsh but he finished 16 point off champions league and almost all his success came at Shakthar which is a two horse race league( not an over statement)

Fonseca is a clear step down from Mourinho regardless of ‘poor fit’ for the club.

The only clubs that can afford to not be obsessed by numbers are rich, hence why money ball has made things more competitive. The Redknapp no tactics run around enjoy yourself don’t seem to cut it anymore. There would be plenty of Managers interested on frees, better managers but obviously the wages are prohibitive so surely that has got to make you wonder about Fonseca… opportunity to prove himself…. really not the type most fans were expecting

Spurs side was not as bad as the Roma side plagued with injuries and premier league rejects. Also, Mourinho was actually backed (maybe not as much as he should have been), The fronseca was not backed at all. And you have to remember, Mourinho said the spurs side was capable of challanging for the title when he came, he then brought players he wanted, and still was struggling to get top four.

These almost identical numbers got both of them sacked? 🤔

We disdain players that take Spurs Gold Shillings, and then show Spurs disrespect. I have total respect for Conte for saying he won’t take on the job, more so than those that say they are up for it… until they’ve settled in.
I’ll respect Fonseca if he arrives and gives his best… but… on paper he is not good enough to be a Spurs Manager (hope I am wrong).

Seems a reasonable theory of his role (stop gap) and one I hope is true. He might even surprise us. Just wonder what the reaction will be if we are in the bottom half of the table, though, come winter.

Numbers,we seem to be in awe of numbers. Isn’t life a little more than numbers. We distain players who disrespect the badge and shirt. Or those who don’t seemingly put enough effort in and don’t want to play for us.
But that doesn’t seem to apply to managers. Conte doesn’t want us, Naglemann doesn’t want us, Ten hag is enjoying his comfort zone and doesn’t want us. But we have to have them over someone who’s happy to come.
I just find it strange. If they don’t want us they can do the other imo.

Jose was the wrong manager, wont go into my disdain for him, I was very vocal about it from the start, but as a manager his style was not Tottenham and his approach was not ENIC – he was a poor fit. However, comparing those numbers, Jose did more with a worse side in a harder league. This Fonseca guy is a stepping stone, he is an interim at best until Tag or Naglesmann are available. So for those expecting us to turn around and kick on, I can see at least 1-2yrs with this dud (not backed as he not the man levy wanted), then preferred manager comes in, and we rebuild (ala Poch) back to the top 4 being the “holy Grail” and unless ENIC leaves or the new manager is a miracle worker we will be lucky to get 1 maybe 2 pots in the next 6 or 7 yrs before Lewis croaks and ENIC sells up.

7th vs 7th is even more misleading when you consider we were 11points closer to our goal🤦🏻‍♂️

I was so hopeful when I thought THFC may get Conte, a proven winner who apparently wouldn’t accept nothing less than maximum effort & mentality, etc….oh wait a moment, THFC tried that & upset too many ‘snowflakes,’ both players & fans!
& now, allegedly set to appoint an uninspiring & underwhelming manager because that’s what THFC do best, settle for mediocrity & stay ‘Spursy.’
Finishing 7th in Serie A is incomparable to 7th in Premier League.

What it does is emphasis why the ones who are familiar with his record are so concerned. Another thing id like to throw out there that this doesn’t show is our 7th place was 5 points behind the champions league places Roma’s 7th was 16!!!
