“He has so much going for him at Tottenham” Brad Friedel says flop doesn’t need a transfer

By Bruce Grove -

The negative turn Dele Alli’s career has taken recently is still baffling to most Tottenham fans, yet former White Hart Lane number one, Brad Friedel insists he doesn’t have to leave the club to rediscover his form.

Alli played the entire 90 minutes as Vitesse beat Spurs 1-0 in the Europa Conference League on Thursday evening.

That result showed yet again that he is no longer a game-changing player like he was when he first joined the club.

A lack of playing time was an issue for him last season, but he started the first six Tottenham matches this season and failed to impress.

He may have missed his chance to do that as he has been on the bench in the last two league matches, and Spurs have won them.

A move away from the Tottenham Stadium might help him recapture his best form, but American, Freidel says he isn’t the type of player that needs to leave to get back to form.

He told Sky Sports: “I don’t think Dele Alli is that character.

“If Jose Mourinho had stayed with what had gone on, possibly.

“But with the new head coach coming in and being given the opportunity to impress, I don’t think so.

“It’s almost like going and signing to a new club. I think Dele has put enough money in the bank, so to speak, with regards to the supporters at Tottenham knowing that he is top quality, knowing that he can work hard, knowing that he loves the club.

“He has so much going for him at Tottenham, I don’t think he would be the type of player that needs to move somewhere to be able to resurrect his career.

“Some players definitely, especially if one head coach is still there that hasn’t been playing you for a season and then going on to the next, possibly.

“But I think there is too much talent in him to let him go and I think he is too talented a boy and too confident a boy when he gets going to need a move to another club to get up to the performance level that he should be at”

Although Alli is struggling to get back to form, Daniel Levy has shown faith in talented players before now and the attacking midfielder will almost certainly remain at Spurs until he gets back to top form again.
