“He doesn’t trust that defence and that’s the biggest problem of it all” Pundit explains Ndombele new role

By Bruce Grove -

Tanguy Ndombele has been Tottenham’s most creative player in this campaign.

His fine form was one reason Spurs were flying in the first half of the season. Jose Mourinho used him as the creative head in a three-man midfield with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Moussa Sissoko playing behind him.

This set up has changed in recent games with Ndombele playing closer to the defence as Spurs struggle at the back.

Their lack of quality and consistency in defence means that all their players have to contribute to their defensive duties.

With that in mind, we’ve seen Ndombele playing further away from the opponent’s goal and Danny Mills thinks it is because Mourinho doesn’t trust his defenders.

He says Spurs creative side will only truly be sorted out when they have fixed their poor backline simply because Mourinho will always be concerned about how his defenders will perform.

“It’s working out the balance,” Mills told Football Insider

“Once upon a time that creative midfield player was Christian Eriksen and he was absolutely superb and the understanding he had with those other attacking players was brilliant.

“Now it’s been Ndombele, it could be Dele Alli.

“But until Mourinho gets his defence sorted out he’s always a little bit concerned with what happens in the rest of the team.

“He doesn’t trust that defence and that’s the biggest problem of it all. He doesn’t believe they have the confidence to do what he wants so he has to tweak the rest of the team for that.”
