Harry Winks’ Perfect Midfielder | video

By The Boy -

Harry Winks is a player that divides opinion. My take on him is that nobody knows where to play him. The boy is 24-years of age and nobody can explain to me what he does, he’s an unconvincing holding midfielder and an implausible attacking player.

Indeed, only a couple of months ago, Winks was branded Tom Carroll Mark II by some fans – Carroll left Spurs in 2017 after recording approximately 642,662 square passes in 27 Premier League appearances.

Perhaps José can get more compelling tune out of the boy? Who knows…

When pressed by the opposition Winks struggles, bit like Sissoko. That is the step up in quality that only the best have. I agree he could do with more quality around him, but so could Lo Celso and I trust him in tight areas (oo er missus). When Harry is allowed to play and teams drop off he looks decent enough, but he is severely limited in the the attacking third. He still has scope to improve though, but by how much? He would have learned a lot off Dembele, but he can hardly copy his stature. I agree that a few pounds of muscle would not go amiss. As for aggression, I don’t think you can learn it at 24.

True, Poch was a miracle worker.

Winks rode on the ‘poch effect’ bandwagon.. Was never good enough for england.. Poch developed half the england squad debutants at one point. Even an old rickie lambert got caps.

I don’t rate him. Never have done. I’d sell him to the highest bidder. Good luck son.

Maybe as someone said work on his strength, add some aggression, it’s the curse of the hod carrier. The most thankless job in football getting the ball, not losing it and passing it on. Not comparing him but Didier Deschamps used to get dogs abuse, someone famous dismissed him as “the water carrier”, was it Ginola or Cantona? Fans used to say, but he doesn’t do anything but recycle the ball, he can’t dribble, can’t shoot, can’t score, all because he wasn’t flashy and they don’t understand the game. He did all right winning every honour in the game. A bad Tottenham team and injury and no protection in midfield are making Winks and a few others like Alderweireld look like bad players. I rate him.

He needs to get on the weights in my humble opinion.. A more muscley winks and he wont get shoved off the ball so easily, he’s often offloading quick sideways and backwards in fear of contact. He wants to get hold of it and start pinging more important passes.. Practicing passing like a demon and he could get better.

Where else can he play apart from centre mid too? No pace for the wings. Not physical enough to be a defender. Not clinical or physical enough to be a forward.. He will always be a centre mid, alright squad player, not good enough to be a key starter to win titles.. Liverpool and city have monsters in the middle.

Nothing special about winksy I’m afraid. I would prefer ryan mason in there. Tom carroll was never enough physically, winks is having similar problems. If one is a small centre mid (like me at 5ft 10.5inch) then one has to be strong for their size to play in the middle.. Need to be a warrior like gattuso or roy keane. Or have special attributes like pirlo and pass like a don everytime. Winks has nothing top class in his locker. He is rather average at everything. A jack of all trades, but master of none…. Give us someone like de bruyne and kane would flourish. And dele.

He was looking very good when he first broke in, he was labelled an Iniesta type and got in the England squad. He had some outstanding games and against good opposition too, particularly in the Champions League (remember that?). I’d describe him as potentially a deep lying playmaker but he’s looking a bit too lightweight in a two man midfield these days. He’s definitely been affected by injury and as a result didn’t kick on properly, he might not be the same again, even at a young age.

I think he should go and play in Spain if it doesn’t work out at Spurs, would suit him better. Jose prefers brick $hit houses in midfield, as his persistence with Dier shows (Which makes calls for Jose to buy back a player like Edwards as total garbage). Doesn’t bode well. Not that anything does under Maureen from what I’ve seen so far…

Best way to describe him is a round peg in a square hole
