“Give him six months then you can judge him properly” Spurs fans urged to be patient with Fonseca

By Bruce Grove -

Tottenham fans have been urged to give Paulo Fonseca time before they judge him if he becomes their next manager.

The ex-Roma boss is reportedly set to become the next Tottenham manager after a long search for a replacement for Jose Mourinho.

His arrival hasn’t been announced yet, but it seems almost certain that he will be their next manager after they appointed Fabio Paratici as their director of football.

Spurs fans have suffered from a lack of success for a very long time and they have seen top managers like Jose Mourinho struggle to help them win trophies.

The fans are likely to judge their next boss very quickly, but former Leeds United striker, Noel Whelan says Spurs fans have to be patient with Fonseca when he comes.

He says Tottenham are a poor side now, and the manager needs time for a massive rebuild.

However, six months should be enough time for the fans to judge if he is taking them forward.

When asked if Paratici pushing Fonseca’s appointment is a good sign for Spurs fans, Whelan told Football Insider: “Only time will tell.

“He needs six months. Give him six months then you can judge him properly. The club is a complete unknown at the moment.

“Is Harry Kane going to be there? There’s a lot of rebuilding needed. Can they win the league? No.

“Can they win a domestic cup? Probably not. Daniel Levy is looking at a three-year progression.

“He wants this to be the start of a period of progression. He tried that with Mourinho and he didn’t do it.

“It’s a big job at the moment and Fonseca needs to win over the fans very quickly.

“He’s not an exciting appointment and he’s under pressure already. I’m just glad the manager thing is nearly over, it needs to stop now.”

Except
1 His managerial team have already accepted other jobs
2 In case you haven’t heard Kane already wanted to go
Other than that you make a compelling argument!

Lampard and the Fonz are both rookie managers.. Frank was a great player, I’m not sure our man was.. Neither strike me as a leader or boss..

Out of the whole world 80-95% of all counterfeit products come from China. The Russians being the other country has to make you laugh… I would trust the Talibans vaccine about the same as those two.

Just been watching Hungary v Portugal in a completely full Ferenc Puskas stadium. Fantastic atmosphere. Victor Orban ignored the EU vaccine protocol and bought vaccines from Russia and China. My dream is to visit a full Spurs stadium and to hear the whole crowd chanting Enic and Levy out!

I reckon he has only been brought in for a season until the real target is free to come in, The DOF will be running the show for the next 12 months and is job is to get the squad sorted out ready for next season I believe Levy has identified there is not a snowball in hells chance of using doing anything this season. So if he does have a good season win win and if not he will be out anyway in 12 months.

Yet another three year jam tomorrow project. We have had 20 years of jam tomorrow projects. This is just another attempt by Levy to hide in the shadows behind a DOF and a patsy manager appointment. The top clubs have owners whose primary focus is on the pitch. We have owners whose primary focus is off it and nothing will change at THFC until they have gone. Just remember whilst they are using jam tomorrow excuses for no investment or ambition they are charging jam today ticket prices to line their pockets

I think we need to let the emotion around Levy take a back seat when judging the new manager as an individual. It’s not his fault he’s in this role, it’s the biggest job he’s ever had. If he’s good enough for you, if he isn’t he I think we need to let the emotion around Leavy take a back seat when judging the new manager as individual. It’s not useful is in this role, it’s the biggest job is ever had.

However, we need to keep a close eye on Levy and his meddling.

There are many comments addressing this article and most have valid points. I was deeply disappointed when I heard that Fonseca is to be our new manager. However, if that is the case, I feel we need to give the guy a chance. It would appear that he plays attacking football which goes down well with me but for that to happen, we must have a very solid defence. I just hope Levy backs the new management team and that we buy some rugged and skilful players. We also need to get rid of at least eight players. And without naming them, all Spurs fans know who they are. One miserable cup in 20 years says everything about Levy’s management of Spurs and he surely knows how the supporters feel about his tenure. Let’s wait and see and I say it again, give the new management team our backing.

Out of common decency I’m not prejudging Paulo.

If it goes wrong I won’t blame him either. I know who is responsible for this whole setup.

I laughed at Levy’s line about asking players to find new clubs. If they have years on nice juicy contracts then like Danny Rose they’re going nowhere.

The club has millions of supporters & therefore millions of different opinions on who the dead wood are. There is know way he can/will ship out 5 or 6 passengers during the window as the players would rather languish in the reserves & pick up 20k a week more than moving to a ‘lower’ club for less money & play regularly. We all know the new guy will only last a max of 3 years – it is Tottenham, after all but that is the way of the game nowadays.

Not in his first season he didn’t as they had a transfer ban. He got them into the top 4 and Chelsea spent money once the ban was lifted. Chelsea would of identified those players regardless of who was in charge. It just happened to be Lampard…

I can’t agree with your Lampard comparison. He spent €247 mill on new players.

Unfortunately i am not prepared to give him 6 months. His records is pitiful only gaining honours in a 2 team league and it is a joke appointment by Levy to bring in a puppet on the cheap.

Will be unable to attract players capable of pushing us on and will certainly convince Kane that his future lies elsewhere.

Any manager that comes in and is happy to have none of his coaching team with him says everything about the man and how short term the plan is.

Also that other than Shakter he has been sacked within 2 years and in most cases within 1 year says everything about him. He did the impossible and failed to win the league with Porto – enough said

The atmosphere will be toxic from game 1 and I struggle to find a single spurs fan with an optimism for the coming season knowing how a team that struggled for 7th is to be seriously weakened at management and player level.

🤣🤣🤣🤣
I despair reading nonsense like this from an ex-pro footballer turned analyst.
Six months? That’ll be ⅔ of the season gone, so if THFC are ‘way off the Premier League leadership pace’ I’m sure we fans/supporters would know before then!?
Like most, IF it is ‘Funseeker’ who’s appointed, I’d give him/the squad my support but I’ve a feeling with it potentially being a largely unimpressive, short term, budget manager appointment he’d seriously need to hit the ground running & maintain momentum to keep the loyal support onside, rather than test their patience with any below par, turgid, shambolic displays like last season.
& a (new) 3 year plan/progression?? It’s been TWENTY YEARS so far with ONE league cup to show for the ENIC progression, FFS!

I think most Spurs fans will agree with Whelan’s comments.
A lot of pundits said hiring Conte would be a statement that Spurs are going all out to win things. That didn’t happen and now we are seeing the club go in quite a different direction.
My view is that Fonseca will be a steady pair of hands to see us through a turbulent financial period. I’d even go so far as to say this is very similar to Chelsea hiring Lampard. I’m sure he will work well with Paratici to rebuild the squad until our stadium can be filled and the real money starts rolling in. I’m sure Levy’s stance is. If he does well, it’s a bonus. If he doesn’t, I’ll just get rid as I always do.
I wish him all the luck in the world and i will support him and the team.
It wouldn’t surprise me if we are the first team to win the European Conference. A title nobody wants but a title none the less.
I doubt next season or the season after will be too pretty results wise but we are where we are. Thanks again Daniel.

If this appointment is finally (why have we waited so long if not to save a bit of money here and there?) confirmed then there will be about two months before a ball is kicked in competition. During that two month period the manager can shift some dead wood and bring in some new talent and energy and could earn some positive plaudits from supporters. I say “could” with more than a note of caution because he could also fail to shift all the dead wood and bring in perceived indifferent or even mediocre replacements. Whichever of these scenarios develops an embryonic “supporter mindset” will already be taking shape and this will quickly harden with the new seasons results. If the results go well he could be given the 6 month grace. If, on the other hand, the early results go poorly then whatever happened in the transfer window will be seen as irrelevant and I don’t believe he will last 6 months. If by early November the team is languishing in the relegation zone I cannot see the appointment lasting. So I reckon 4 months tops is more realistic? Having said that I hope he ships out 5 or 6 and brings in 4 gems. Ever hopeful. COYS
