Former Tottenham star “set to return” to the Premier League this summer

By Mehdi Gokal -

Wolves and Crystal Palace are reportedly interested in signing former Tottenham right-back, Matt Doherty, according to a report by 90min.

The Republic of Ireland international is “set to return” to the Premier League six months after his contract with Tottenham was terminated when the club reached its loan limit.

After the loan move of Djed Spence to Rennes was completed, Spurs realised they had reached their loan limit and hence, had to terminate the player’s contract.

Doherty instead signed for Atletico Madrid on a free transfer on a six-month deal, but he has struggled to establish himself in the Spanish club, with just 12 minutes of playing time under his belt.

According to the report, the Irishman is not interested in renewing his contract with Atletico Madrid, and a number of Premier League clubs are keen to sign him, including Wolves, Crystal Palace, Burnley, and Sheffield United.

Doherty’s experience in the Premier League makes him a valuable asset for any team looking to strengthen its defensive options, and both Wolves and Crystal Palace are reportedly leading the race for his signature.

Doherty joined Spurs from Wolves in 2020 for a fee of €16.80m but suffered from injuries throughout his time at the club.  The former Wolves man had to earn his spot last season as he forced his way into Conte’s starting XI bagging 2 goals and 3 assists in 6 games. However, he then picked up an injury against Aston Villa which saw his season come to an end.

And since then he never really managed to impress his way into becoming a regular starter for Conte. The Italian preferred Emerson Royal over him despite the Brazilian’s poor form, and the signing of Pedro Porro was the nail in the coffin for him.
