Former Tottenham man very negative about Spurs chances of breaking into top four

By Bruce Grove -

Jermaine Jenas is unconvinced about Tottenham’s chances of returning to the top four at the end of next season despite ending the last campaign on a positive note.

The Lilywhites made a poor start to last season and it took the appointment of Jose Mourinho to turn things around for them.

They now have the chance to sign the players that they need and to prepare to end next season in a better position.

They have just landed Joe Hart on a free transfer and he joins former Southampton midfielder, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to sign for the club in this transfer window.

The Lilywhites still have some more signings to do as they have also lost Jan Vertonghen who left at the expiry of his last deal and Kyle Walker-Peters, who they just sold to Southampton after his successful loan spell with them.

Jenas revealed that he is afraid that the current squad isn’t good enough to play into the top four and he thinks that the club needs a few more signings.

Asked by former Arsenal player Ray Parlour on the TalkSport Breakfast show how he thinks Spurs will do this season, Jenas replied: “Why are you asking me this question, mate?! Just because you’re happy with your signings…

“I am worried if I’m totally honest with you. I don’t see Tottenham getting in the top four as it stands right now.

“I’ve not seen anything in regards to a level of performance that tells me they’re going to break back in.

“The end of the season was positive but it was getting results in not the most beautiful way.

“That’s Jose’s way and I think a lot of Tottenham fans will still take that, because the results are the most important thing.

“But the way I see it right now, they need to bring in at least two or three players and, if they don’t do that, I don’t see how they possibly can get into the top four.”

He is rather negative is Jenas but he has to make a living and putting down his former club probably works well for him.

And probably why we signed nobody for 12 months. Poch didn’t want anymore dross coming in from Levy and partly why they probably parted company in the end. It’s unrealistic to think that Jose won’t end up falling out with Levy over transfers. It’s only a matter of time…

He was being honest and he’s pretty close to spot on if you’re talking about right now. Regardless of who’s manager we need three quality defenders and a quality backup for Kane. PEH might be a good sort but does he vastly improve us? Hart will rarely stand in our goal. So Levy needs to get busy for Jenas to be wrong.

I like him as a pundit what was he to say “now they have PEH and Mighty Joe I cant see anyone catching them”

Jenas is a realist rather than a pessimist.. I have to agree with him apart from we need 3 or 4 or 5 to kick on and improve… Rather than 2 or 3… We are still in a full or half transition…. A couple players won’t change us unless they are bale calibre.

Jenas has changed his tune recently and gone very negative about Spurs, plus he’s said it on the radio equivalent of the sun.

Agreed mate. Astute business people buy at the bottom of the downward curve and we cannot get much more bottom than where we are now. The problem is that Little Levy and Uncle Josoros want to use only the money from sales to fund purchases and in that lies the problem that will shi*e all over yet another transfer window and season.

What I see is this:

He is rather perceptive is Jenas, he has to make a living and being honest about his former club probably works well for his career as a pundit.

Fair and honest from Jenas. We could well do with players like Rafa VDV who came to the Prem with quality, was cheap, but his best years were behind him. Players who are not overwhelmed with playing against Utd, Chelsea and the rest. 2 years to give us our swagger back, get in the top 4 and we then bring in better after that. Rakitic instead of Winks. Dave Mackay instead of Sissoko! Buying quality and experience, if not a little past their sell by would suit us more than settling for guys who have never experienced big games in big leagues or Ch Lg. Inter Milan seem to have had a bit of that. Within a season they are in a better shape than us and they will build on Young and Godin. As plans go, it seems better than the one we have. Does anyone know what ours is? If it is to sit back and rely on 20% possession v Newcastle I simply can’t wait!

You are quite right as to what we need, but we wouldn’t get enough money from these sales to finance the purchases, and in Levy land that you have to sell first before buying. I cannot see, for the life of me, why Lewis cannot lend the club a serious amount of money to compete in the transfer market. It is no good uttering the mantra that we are not owned by oligarchs and sheiks and that we do things differently as we are self financing when income engendered by football activities is spent on acquiring more land and property, thereby inflating the NAV of Enic by which Lewis and Levy benefit. Lewis is an astute businessman who has a history of taking risk, unlike Levy with his degree in land management. A far sighted CEO would now take the opportunity to strengthen the squad substantially at heavily discounted prices. ” Audere est Facere”.

Jenas is on the money with this and he knows the inside track on the behind the scenes situation at the club. This window is the usual Levy hallmark. We seem to buy one player early and then get linked with every player on the planet but it all fizzles out like a damp squid until the last 5 mins of the transfer window. Arsenal have added some quality we faf about with the likes of Southampton and Bournemouth now as we settle down to midtable Wafa mediocrity. We need a left back(Davies is bang average) we need a RB, we need another CB and another DM alongside Holsten man. We need two world class attacking midfielders and a top rated second striker who can not only double for Kane but can push Kane for a first team spot. That is the minimum with additions to the bench. Offload if you can, Aurier, Davies, Dier, Foyth, flappy arm man Lamela, Nobodyjustbelly, and maybe Tiddlywinks.

Expressing uncertainty about spurs’ top 4 chances is what makes him money? Not sure I follow you.

Nothing will ever change with Levy. If the fans can see who we need to recruit and which positions need strengthening , why can’t the management and the board see it? We all understand Levy’s transfer policy which is trying to buy cheap to sell dear, but his instincts are those of a property developer not a football chairman. I think it is a sign of weakness when a CEO surrounds himself with yes men and never takes the advice of more knowledgeable advisors. This is a similar trait to Boris Johnson who has the weakest cabinet I have ever seen in a government. It is full of sycophants of limited ability. I don’t believe that Lewis is averse to selling the club, he is a trader by heart but Enic will ask too much, and rather reluctantly, we seem stuck with them.

I think Jenas has it spot on , we need quality signings nothing else will do . It’s no good just getting bodies in to make up the numbers , that tactic has ultimately failed , square pegs in round holes doesn’t work as we all know. Other clubs quietly going about their transfer business getting players in , ours is 90% paper talk and hearsay. Time to change tac Mr.Levy and get on with it !

Levy buys players for the sake of looking like we are spending, but unless they are good enough to go straight into the team, we might as well not bother.

Spot on Jermaine, we need strengthening at right back, center back attacking midfield and a striker, but without a doubt Levy will let us down once more, we have to get Levy and Lewis out of this club if we want to win anything soon. Buying players for buying players sake isn’t good enough, we have to buy players that will go straight into the first eleven or we aren’t making the team better, no good just buying players for the bench, they have to be better than we already have. Zeki Celik, Kim Min Jae, Robin Quaison and Jack Grealish, bring in those four and I think we have a team to challenge at least for a top four spot if not more.

Fair enough comment, we need more quality and the right back and striker positions need sorting now, never mind another centre back and creative mid. Our bench as ever worries me, not exactly heaving with game changing talent unless Gedson knows something we don’t. Lamela time to leave. That leaves Bergwign, Sissoko, Tanganga and not a lot else. Time for Levy to get to work. Sessegnon is here but might as well not be.
