Former Liverpool man makes lazy comments over Gareth Bale signing for Tottenham

By Bruce Grove -

Glen Johnson has claimed that Gareth Bale would have preferred to move to Manchester United if the Red Devils had pushed to sign him.

Bale departed Real Madrid and returned to Tottenham on loan for the season after leaving the Lilywhites for a world record fee in 2013.

He fell out of favour with Zinedine Zidane since the Frenchman became the club’s manager and decided to leave the Bernabeu this season to play more regularly.

He was linked with a return to the Premier League and Tottenham faced serious competition from Manchester United for his signature.

The Red Devils are looking to sign Jadon Sancho also and it seems that their pursuit of the former Manchester City protégé prompted them to decline to make a move for Bale.

Johnson reckons that if United were serious about landing Bale and pushed to sign him, they would have won the race for his signature.

“The only thing I could put it down to with United is they get to a point in the negotiations and then they must stall on the finest little details,” Johnson told Sky Sports.

“Bale, for example, if Bale has got the option to go to Tottenham or United, I believe he would go to United. But United clearly didn’t put the final details to it. It’s strange.

Ridiculous comments from Johnson, he has absolutely no clue what Bale would have wanted if United had made a serious attempt to sign him. All we have are the actual words spoken from Bale and his agent and in both cases, they made it clear his heart was in Tottenham.

There is always one pundit that ignores the facts to get themselves some publicity, this was a lazy attempt.

Bonzo is the fastest in the prem and he’s 30… Bale’s 31. Gareth will still be rapid I have no doubt.

Looking at stats the premier league speed demons top ten last season all hit over 23 mph.. This is quick.. Bales goal against Real Sociedad he hit just under 23mph (though that was a 70 yard sprint)…. Lamptey wasn’t near top ten.. Bale may very well make the top ten this year, he won’t be far off the fastest at all. He will still have pace in his locker…. Interestingly Bonzo was the fastest in the 19/20 season, clocking in at 23.49mph in Citys defeat to the chavs. Kyle Walker is still rapid. At 30 years old he is pretty much the same age as Bale.

Ex players without brains who will never make tv punditry.. Add Glen ‘is a huge’ Johnson to that list. 😆 Just because he wished he had gone to United, but ended up at the kop instead. Times have changed, but no matter, Glen has become a mindreader.

Anyway he is not for sale unless of course Brighton get relegated which on the evidence of their positive start to the season is unlikely me thinks!

I doubt £40m will be enough!

IF Aurier goes to Spartak we should definitely be in for Lamptey, can’t believe Chelsea let him go.
He looks much better than Reese James.

35-40m should be enough for Brighton to let him go.
57min MOM performance is impressive

Stan for some reason has personal animosity towards José & us Spurs.
Not sure why but whenever our club is on his mind he only talks negativity.

Stopped reading his stuff along time ago.

Ask Ian Wright how bitter he is.
One is on TV every week & one is not even on the radio anymore.

Bitter.

Digressing I thought Bale was quick in his prime at Spurs but just seen Brightons Tariq Lamptey burning up pace, he got some speed this kid!

If we weren’t doing the other necessary purchasing then I’d be worried – but with the other deals we’ve done/we’re doing it’s a statement of intent signing, love it

Yeah that too ;D

His argument is we could have got in three or four players on loan for the same wage bill as Bale…but we are filling the squad with a few more permanent signings this summer, it’s nearly done and there’ll be no space beyond that, and the last thing you need is to risk having another two or three Gedson Fernandes type deals floating about the place.

He doesn’t get it. When Bale gets on the pitch he’ll lift us, he doesn’t need to play 90 minutes every game.

I never liked Glen Johnson as a player, and I like him even less with those comments.
