Former Gooner details why Tottenham is feeling the pressure from Arsenal in the top-four race

By Eddie Razo -

On Monday, Tottenham Hotspur received good news when they saw Manchester United fall at Anfield to Liverpool. Spurs were hoping that this streak would continue into Tuesday when Arsenal took on Chelsea.

However, The Gunners avoided what occurred to Manchester United as Mikel Arteta’s squad went into Stamford Bridge and picked up a 4-2 win. The two north London rivals are tied with the same number of points, but Tottenham remains in fourth due to goal differential.

During a segment on the Sky Sports postgame show, former Arsenal man Paul Merson spoke about how Spurs are beginning to feel the pressure, adding that there’s no doubt in his mind that Antonio Conte’s squad was watching the game, hoping for a Chelsea win.

“Every Tottenham fan, every Tottenham player. And don’t let anybody tell you they’re not watching,” Merson said. “Please tell me they’re not everybody. What we all played the game you’re watching. You’re going like where they won’t win there. And now they’re like, Wow.”

Tottenham might have their eyes on Saturday’s fixtures as it will see Manchester United travel to the Emirates Stadium for a tilt with Arsenal. After their loss to Liverpool, The Red Devils are in dire need of the three points; meanwhile, The Gunners will hope to leap over Spurs, who will be taking on Brentford.

Arteta and the Arse made a big mistake by cancelling our game earlier in the season. All because they had one player with covid and a couple of injuries. They were better off playing us then, this decision will come back to bite them.. Conte had only been in charge for a few weeks and we were still very poor. Wind on a few months later and we are a different team.. They also sold their top striker Aubamayang since.. Both teams are on the up, I think the Gooners have some decent youth who will only get better. But right now we have the better players especially forward players, and the superior manager which tips the balance in our favour. Believe in the ConteDust. Up the Spurs.

I really hope we get to The NL Derby with it all resting on the result , as painful as it could be .
I sincerely believe We Are The Better team despite our inconsistencies , I want this chance to erase some bitter memories , to begin the rebuild of our beloved club [ come on ,admit it , you love ’em warts n all ] to finally nail that “Spursy ” tag in one fell swoop .
Harry and the boys WILL win this game , I hope it secures 4th spot , this would be the biggest game in our history and I for one am excited beyond reason that redemption is on our doorstep .
Am I totally mental ??? NOOOO – C O Y S !!!!!!!!!!!

I agree, Levy saw the whole Emirates thing years ago and has wanted exactly the same for us. There really is nothing in it, it wouldn’t even surprise me if both sets of owners are In cahoots with each other. A super league of some description is also clearly part of the ‘plan’ while property development and land acquisition is at the heart both businesses.

Like you say, they’ve even won the FA Cup under Arteta, so they have the edge in that regard. What’s obvious is that neither sets of owners are interested in competing at the top. Just sitting in that little ‘best of the rest’ pocket, bums on seats, merch milk, milk, milk the fans with expensive days out. Not much else…

You know shipmates I have never thought this in decades of following Spurs but we are morphing in to The Arse. Dodgy owners/Shiny Stadium and now I can’t put a fag paper between the 2 sides we are both near the top of the also rans.Even transfers…it seems every link we have they are also interested in look at Tomi v Royal. The only differences I can see are They play in a disgusting colour strip/they have won pots during their demise/they can beat Racist Scum FC.

Arsenal are currently as lacking in the consistency department as we are and share many of the same mentality issues. I’m hopeful that we still squeeze that fourth spot. Hopefully the shambles against Brighton and Woolwich’s win at Chavski will help to focus minds…

I think some of the claims that we are a vastly superior team compared to Arsenal are a huge exaggeration. Chavski obviously have some issues otherwise they don’t lose at home the way they have on occasion this season.

However, had we gone to Stamford Fridge and won 2-4 then Conte Kulusevski and Bentancur would be hailed as the messiahs and we’d be in the title hunt next season! According to some. Fact is, the table doesn’t lie and when both teams get beaten at home by Brighton, Citeh roll them over 3-0 with ease.

So, nobody outside the top three are much cop and even Chavs have a catastrophe in them defensively. It’s a team game, and as a team Woolwich are no better and no worse than us, as the table suggests there is nothing in it. So I would advise that we please refrain from these delusional comments about our supposed superiority, it’s embarrassing…

… and how did Arsenal handle the pressure when they were favourites for that 4th spot Paul? … Oh yes, they lost 3 straight games against Palace, Brighton and Southampton. OK, so they scored 4 past a Chelsea team, whose Keystone Cops defending was so abysmal, it was reminiscent of a Sunday morning pub league match, after a Saturday night ‘p*ss up!

Nevertheless, I admit it is ‘game on’ now, as we have no margin for error and the NLD is now looking like the pivotal encounter. So we will see if Arsenal have the ‘bottle’ for it, as they are going into the match as favourites in Merson’s eyes! … Well, if they rock up to WHL and ‘turn us over’ then fair play to them, they’ll have deserved it. The invertebrates who suddenly developed a backbone!
