Five areas of Spurs squad Jose wants to strengthen

By Ron Carne -

Jose Mourinho reportedly wants to strengthen five specific positions in his current Tottenham squad ahead of next season.

The 57-year-old was appointed as Mauricio Pochettino’s successor in November, but after an initial upturn in form, things haven’t gone to plan this year.

Spurs crashed out of both the FA Cup and Champions League prior to the coronavirus lockdown, while they remain off the pace in the battle to qualify for the Champions League through their Premier League position.

In turn, Mourinho will perhaps hope to stamp his mark on the squad this summer and ensure he has enough quality and depth to compete on multiple fronts next season.

According to Football Insider, a centre-forward, midfield anchorman, centre-back, right-back and an attacking midfielder are on the club’s specific shortlist of requirements.

It remains to be seen if they’re able to address all those issues in one window, while it’s unclear at this stage how much the club will be willing to spend with widespread suggestions that the coronavirus crisis could have a negative impact on spending across the board this summer.

Given the injuries sustained by the likes of Harry Kane, Heung-Min Son and Moussa Sissoko this season though, coupled with Jan Vertonghen’s current contract being set to expire this summer, it’s relatively clear where reinforcements are needed for Tottenham.
