‘First Choice’ Rodgers Speaks About Spurs Links [Video]

By Joe Fish -

Brendan Rodgers has stressed his commitment to Leicester City amid rumours that he was approached for the job at Tottenham Hotspur.

The Daily Mail understands that Rodgers was the first choice of Daniel Levy to replace Mauricio Pochettino, and that he only moved on to Jose Mourinho after accepting that signing the Northern Irishman from the Foxes was an impossible deal.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of Leicester’s trip to Brighton & Hove Albion, Rodgers refused to entertain what he called “gossip.” Watch the video below to see exactly what he said.

“There is nothing to talk about on it,” he told his press conference. “The game is full of gossip and speculation. “The only thing I will say is I was very happy here at Leicester, I’ve literally just joined the club in February.

“Everything has been great since we’ve been in. We have a project here that we want to develop over the next number of years.”

Rodgers shares many of the same philosophies as Pochettino and would have been a more natural successor. He has done well everywhere he has been and is someone I’d happily see at Spurs in a few years’ time.

But for now I’m excited for something different under Mourinho.

Watching a thing about Hammerby Djungarden derby in Stockholm. They both had their own grounds but now the City built a new corporate stadium and both sides are now Tennant’s in that stadium after being forced to leave their respective homes. Heartbreaking this kind of thing happening all over destroying real football clubs. Not owning your own stadium is a disaster for any football club and shouldn’t occur. They, like us are renters when before they had a home that was theirs. Tragic.

He’s already settled into the party line. Saying he doesn’t need anymore players, telling Soopers about believing he can win the title next year when he’s already admitted he couldn’t at Utd who will spend tenfold that Levy will. Goldstein said it last night, and probably echoes the majority of views….”I can’t wait for the Amazon documentary now”…

And there my friends we have it. 15 mill a year to be the new face of the ENIC scam. Buy into it at your period folks.

I agree, I think Levy has rolled the dice on this. I think he knows that Jose failing and pointing the finger will look worse than Poch doing it, hence the League record pay. He beats Guradiola. I think Levy hoping Jose wont do anything to screw the payday up, and that he is so desperate to get his rep back that he will do what it takes.

Correct, the man is soiled goods.

Only Levy was desperate enough to give him a job because just like when he hired Arry, Levy needs another quick fix for his dead end economic policy and its impact on the team.

All this “he’s a winner” stuff is complete guff.

I hope he does for the sake of the club, 15m a year? He needs to deliver, this is Levy’s idea no Poch to blame anymore because we have the ‘born winner’ right?

No moaning, just winning. Should be great…

“The game is full of gossip and speculation. “The only thing I will say is I was very happy…” using past tense suggests that this is not just speculation. If he said “Its speculation and I AM happy here” that would imply that it really is gossip. He is basically saying he was approached, he said no. So really what we are saying is no top clubs wanted Jose, not even us. So Jose will be jumping through what ever hoops Levy sets out, only time will tell for how long, and Levy can claim…for now… that he is doing what it takes to win.

The manner in which Poch wasn’t backed and how Levy let the brightest coach in world football leave us is nothing short of scandalous.

However, having a manager with a nasty streak and experience of winning isn’t lost on me. That’s not kid ourselves, this is an attempt at a quick fix but it is what it is.

We now expect this ‘serial winner’ to start winning and fast, filling up the trophy cabinet over the next couple of years. Anything short of that folks, is complete and utter failure for this man.

Let the moaning commence…
