Financial pressure on Porto could aid Frank’s striker drought, but there is a €100m release clause

Given the paucity of our attack, the race to sign another striker who can actually score goals has only increased. One man firmly on Tottenham’s radar is Samu Aghehowa.

Sporting News has recently reported that:

Aghehowa has already scored eight goals in nine games for Porto this season, therefore Spurs are extremely interested in the young Spaniard.

As per reports, despite his high release clause, he may be available for a much lesser price due to Porto’s financial constraints.

Financials on the deal would be crucial

Aghehowa’s market value stands at around £43m (€50m), with a contract until June 2029 and a £87m (€100m) release clause. However, Porto’s much alluded to financial pressures could see them accept a significantly lower fee, potentially sparking a bidding war across Europe.

Another issue which needs to be addressed is that Atlético Madrid retains a 50% sell-on clause from his Porto transfer.

A mid-season deal isn’t straightforward, so a summer move remains more likely, though January interest is heating up, all of which is against a backdrop of Tottenham struggling to get Dominic Solanke fit, and Richarlison look like he’s either about to burst into tears or punch someone. Crucially, he looks less and less like he s about to score a goal.

Buy cheap, buy twice, coming home to roost

Tottenham’s problems all boil down to having bought cheap and now having to buy twice. In some instances, a third time. Spurs view Aghehowa as a long-term investment to bolster their forward line, especially with Dominic Solanke’s injury concerns and Richarlison’s inconsistency. Young winger Mathys Tel is not yet seen as ready for a starring role. If Spurs executives are honest with each other, all three have been bad buys.

Less than exceptional sources are suggesting that former sporting director Fabio Paratici is reportedly pushing for the move, targeting a January window acquisition.

Nevertheless, Tottenham are said to be planning to “trump” Chelsea in the race, with monitoring ongoing as part of a broader recruitment strategy. PL France on X spoke of Tottenham’s increased surveillance on Aghehowa.
