Tottenham have been reportedly interested in Juventus star Weston McKennie for quite some time.
The links began in January and continued into the summer with reports suggesting Fabio Paratici was pushing for a move for the midfielder. It was claimed that a fee of around £34m would have sufficed, but Juve kept their man after new signing Paul Pogba suffered a serious injury.
While Spurs’ interest has long been known, Fabrizio Romano has now claimed that Manchester United were actually offered the chance to sign McKennie. This weekend, Romano stated on his YouTube channel that McKennie was among a group of players who were kept as options before the United hierarchy.
McKennie, along with Memphis Depay and Yannick Carrasco, were all offered to the United officials as they desperately tried to bring in new faces for Erik ten Hag.
And even though United didn’t sign either of the Spurs targets in McKennie and Carrasco, they did complete two major signings of Brazilian duo Casemiro and Antony. However, Romano’s update is noteworthy here, as it demonstrates that, despite their recent struggles, United remains an attractive destination for major stars.
Spurs were at one time linked with Antony but they ended up signing fellow Brazilian Richarlison in a mega 60m pound deal and the former Everton man has been nothing short of impressive ever since his move.
Neither was Royal…
That too.
?
This one was below requirement, dead weight. ‘This is not the droid you are looking for.’
Another excuse to not sign a player, sounds familiar in Levyland…
How about signing established quality for a change? Punt, punt, punt….
Funny isn’t it? So many great players we apparently ‘enquired’ about but found ourselves endlessly and ‘tragically’ rebuffed. I can’t think of a top football club more defined by ‘what if’s’, players that got away and missed opportunities.
We must also remind ourselves that in the vast majority of cases we were never ’close’ to making these great signings. All players have a price and a going-rate salary demand. They always end up going to a club in the end because that club pays up, and Levy-Spurs never does…
I think McKinnie is the potential WC breakout star Spurs have planned to sign, but they don’t need another mf despite the Juve connection.
Instead we should leverage our good relations with Rennes and try to extract 20y old speedy Ghana winger Sulemana, a future star and potential WC revelation.
McKennie is not a player Spurs needed. He delivers insufficient effort off of the ball, whether by lack of understanding or by lack of industry. He would have been weight for everyone else to carry.
