Fabrizio Romano confirms Spurs have ‘real interest’ in manager but he ‘wants to have power’ at the club

By Mehdi Gokal -

Tottenham Hotspur’s search for a new manager continues, with Julian Nagelsmann emerging as a top target for the north London club. The German manager was recently dismissed by Bayern Munich and is now being heavily linked to the Spurs job.

Nagelsmann was reportedly on Daniel Levy’s radar back in 2021 when the club sacked Jose Mourinho, but he chose to join Bayern instead. Now, with Antonio Conte’s departure, Nagelsmann is once again being considered by Spurs.

However, according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Nagelsmann is not close to taking the job just yet despite ‘real interest’ from Spurs.

The German who is known to be an admirer of Spurs and followed the club under Mauricio Pochettino is also said to be interested in the job. But Romano believes Nagelsmann wants to know more about the club’s project and vision before making any decision.

Speaking on the Here We Go Podcast, Romano said:

“It is true that Tottenham have a real interest in Nagelsmann, but at the moment from what I understand, Nagelsmann wants to take some time. I don’t see Nagelsmann signing any contract now during the season, everything will be in June or July. He will consider many options, not just Tottenham, and so I think the Tottenham shortlist is not just Nagelsmann, there are five or six names.”

Romano also pointed out that Nagelsmann wants to have power and a good relationship with the board, which could be a potential hurdle at Tottenham.

“At the moment there are many candidates and I’m not sure that Nagelsmann is that close to the Tottenham job because for him the project is crucial he wants to have power, he wants a good relationship with the board so it will take time before he decides.”

Given that Spurs have had four different managers in the last 2 years, it is not surprising to see a young capable manager wanting assurance from the board about their vision before taking the role.

To attract a top-tier manager like Nagelsmann, Spurs will need to be clear about their vision for the club and back the new manager financially while giving them the freedom to work. With other clubs likely to be interested in Nagelsmann’s services, Tottenham will have to move quickly and decisively if they want to secure the German’s signature.
