Expect the unexpected from Daniel Levy and that is why this man could be the next Tottenham manager

By Bruce Grove -

Daniel Levy has a history of hiring managers that verged on the unexpected, Jacques Santini, Martin Jol, Jose Mourinho, even Harry Redknapp all came out of the blue. It is rare that Levy goes with the expected and I suspect it will be no different this time.

Brendan Rodgers, Graham Potter, Scott Parker are all mentioned on a regular basis and the likes of Erik Ten Hag, Roberto Martinez and Hansi Flick also get name-dropped but I am of the opinion it will be none of them.

Lazio manager Simeone Inzaghi heads the market for some weird reason, no idea why that is but I just cannot see him being the next Tottenham boss, so who does that leave, who will Levy go for.

Well, I have decided to drop a few quid on a 20/1 outsider and have backed Lille manager Christophe Galtier to be given the job.

Yes, I know some will say why would he leave Lille who is likely to be crowned French champions and will be competing in next seasons Champions League.

But the Premier League and a big English club is sometimes too big an opportunity to miss and I am sure Galtier knows that his squad will be broken up in the summer and that his Lille side is probably not going to be as competitive next season.

It is not arrogant to suggest that Spurs are a much bigger club than Lille, it is a fact, despite the horrendous season the club has just experienced.

Galtier plays the sort of football that is synonymous with Spurs, he does not hesitate to blood the younger ones and he is obviously good at his job to dethrone PSG.

Levy may well hire a tired old manager like Rafa Benitez or really smack us all in the nether regions and do something ridiculous like go for a Chris Wilder type of manager but even I doubt that will happen.

I expect it to be a bit of a surprise and Galtier just ticks all those boxes for me.

What about Ruben Amorim? 76% win ratio so we know he’s better than Timmy. Won the Portuguese cup in his first season for Braga. Is winning the league with sporting. At 36 years old he could be the next Poch. Buyout clause is 30mil so I doubt it’ll happen. Probs off to Barca once Ronald gets sacked. I think you’re right though, we’re in for a surprise

I think he’s trying everything to get Rodgers. They’ll miss out on CL. He’ll take pay rise and challenge of getting Spurs up. Let’s face it. Spurs are bigger and have the clout Leicester just simply don’t have yet

“I’m sure we would not have played as bad against Leeds or Villa with him” this just doesn’t make sense. We did play that badly with him – in those types of games. Hence getting sacked. Should have kept him til the end of the season though as it was dead in the water already. But I do think Kanes had an effect on the team and Reguilon single handedly lost the Villa game.

I can see us getting Southgate after the Euros. I don’t want that at all, but I can see it.

I’ll throw an unmentioned name in… Sergio Conceicao from FCPorto. His contract ends at the end of the season, won 2 of the last 4 league titles in Portugal. The club has tremendous financial constraints for the last several seasons. Bloods in youngsters. Brought experience in to tighten defence.

Amazingly I find it hard that the one person that’s been sneaking under the radar without a mention is Zidane. I think that if RM fail to overhaul Athletico for the La Liga title then given the rumblings out of Madrid may seem true. ZZ to Spurs, Gareth back the other way and Benzima in to replace Kane. This is the kind of stuff Levy does. However it doesn’t address the utter shambles of a defence we’ve got. I’d even put Lloris in this. His slow distribution of the ball completely takes the wind out of our sails for counter attacks coupled with the lack of collecting balls from crosses. He bottles it too much for me. Dier….well, just Dire, Tobs…..I feel sorry for. Reggs……not a scooby, Winks……Who?……Ndom……doesn’t want to be at Spurs, and the list goes on.

And while I’m at it, make no mistake, the biggest farce this season was the timing of Mourinho’s sacking. Don’t get me wrong, I was glad to see him go but not a week before the cup final or the remaining few games which could have still secured CL football. I’m sure we would not have played as bad against Leeds or Villa with him. The reason of the timing was a tragic underestimation of the backlash to the ESL. There was levy, assured in the knowledge that Spurs had just hit the jackpot. No cup or qualification needed ever again. We’d hit the big time playing against the top teams, earning the big bucks and recruiting the cream of the crop players every year. Sadly it lasted 48 hours but long enough for levy to shoot himself in the foot by sacking Jose on the same day the league was announced when he thought it didn’t matter about having a manager for the last few games. Putting a boy in charge who had no chance of achieving the success required after levy’s ESL dream sunk Dear Joe Lewis, it’s time to either sell up or Spend, Spend, Spend to avoid losing the fans for good leaving your big wonderful new stadium a ghost town like the Stadium of light became.

Agreed

To think this team were in the C/L final less than 2 years ago is inconceivable

Rodgers is the only one bar Flick or Conte. None will relish the prospect of no European football next season which is what the team gave its fans yesterday as a thank you and goodnight. If it’s not one of those names we’re odds on to become a regular mid table team or maybe the next Leeds or Sunderland tumbling in and of relegation for years to come. Spurs need to rid themselves of about 10 journeymen and replace them with 10 world class performers. Some chance right. It’s starts with the management appointment alongside the end of the restrictions in wage structure that will never see this team recruit the winning kind. Yesterday’s performance in front of the fans for the final time was the worst performance I’ve ever seen in my 50 years supporting this club. I blame the leaking of Kane wanting out of the club. Leaked by his personal team which they knew would destabilise his own team. That news breaking before the last two matches only destroys players enthusiasm and ambition. It’s now cost the club and its fans European football next season and I’m sorry but Harry Kane, legend no more. If there was anyone to be substituted yesterday it was Kane. If you don’t want to be there get off the pitch

Had a look at all the odds. Inzaghi is favourite now with Potter and Parker just behind.

Pleased to see Martinez has drifted.

Who ever we get has got a mighty job on their hands. For me there are serious issues around “team harmony”. I get the feeling there are 3 or 4 different groups and they don’t like each other.. this disunity obviously carries to on field and managers like Mason who seem to have favourites don’t help.. the performance last night lacked any kind of desire and commitment and the players should be ashamed to collect the salaries they get.. new manager will need to get rid of all these bad influences even if they are good players

Rodgers roughly 10/1 across major bookmakers. Well worth a punt

HH, I agree with your logic and certainly wouldn’t be the worst option as Lille don’t concede a lot. The amount of mentions Martinez has been getting is the one that worries me, as much as I’d like us to play good football again I think our defence with him would be scary bad and it seems gone are the days teams sold 10 and bought 10 new players.

So few managers over achieve consistently, it seems fixing the recruitment would be the safer bet.

It will certainly be the classic cheap as frittes Levy French option.

Poor sod won’t know what he’s walking into.

Rodgers is my bet, not that any bookie will give me a price in a shop…..useless bakstads

TBH I’m sick of hearing the name Daniel Levy. Every time you write about him you are appealing to his ego. Stop feeding the monster.

Yes I did see a article saying he was leaving lille and did wonder the same. I love a little bit of excitement so covered him myself for interest.

Galtier has done very well at Lille but they do have a good scouting setup.
He’s likely to leave as Lille are suffering financially and their team will likely lose their best players.
He will be a manager in demand.

France football are also linking Galtier to Leicester. So maybe there are legs to the rumours of Rodgers to Spurs.

He’s done a great job at Lazio with a small budget very attack minded team but will always concede goals

I don’t think I even care anymore – unless Levy authorises a fire sale of about 6-7 players there isn’t anyone in world football that could turn this around.

Manager, “head coach” – no, “Chief Turd Polisher” is whats on the application form.

Inzaghi is weirdly linked with Leicester as well.
