Even Daniel Levy Must Be Feeling Uncomfortable This Morning [opinion]

By The Boy -

Injuries in football happen. They are not incidents for which football clubs are shocked or surprised by. In any professional sports, especially a contact sport, one is in fact, fortunate to avoid injury.

Even Mourinho’s staunchest, most unforgiving critics must be able to acknowledge that this squad – which began collapsing well before the moment Mauricio Pochettino was asked to clear his desk – had become an afterthought in ENIC’s portfolio.

The arguments against having a second striker are for me, are so very mind numbing, I refuse to give them house room in this place. Of course, the issues extend beyond Harry Kane’s absence.

Must I really wheel out the instances of us being the “only side in Europe’s top 5 Leagues not to buy anyone in back to back transfer windows” again? Must I? It appears I must, because those aiming their frustrations at José seem to believe that scandalous inactivity like that somehow magically heals itself over time. It does not.

I’d assert that no manager on the planet could weave these oddments, these end of lines into a fabulous collection.

Indeed, it spoke volumes that Daniel sprang for Mourinho in the first place. According to Forbes, the Portuguese is on double Pochettino’s money. The cynic in me cannot help but feel that £15million was deemed by the Spurs board (no laughing at the back, please), infinitely cheaper than spending what Mauricio needed to make Tottenham whole again on the pitch.

There are many great lines in the Italian Job (1969), but this one feels especially pertinent.

The Mafioso, Altabani, ambushes Charlie Croker and pushes his car off a mountain road, where the Aston Martin falls forever, smashing into the rocks on its way down into the dark.

After Croker does his “every ice cream parlour” speech, Altabani smiles and says:

“Well, gentlemen, it’s a long walk back to England. And it’s that way.”

It’ll be a long wait until we reach the next transfer window, and we will spend much of that wait sat in a billion pound shopping centre.

There must be a reason that Liverpool decided not to demolish Anfield and erect a revenue-stream behemoth in its place. Perhaps it’s because Fenway Sports thought spending money on players the coach wanted was a better idea. The fools…

Lewis made millions from restaurants, properties and other ventures. Turned his millions into billions by gambling on the stock market. He lives in the Bahamas next door to sean Connery. He moved there to avoid paying tax over here. He apparently owes loads so he’s a tax exile…. 4.5 billion all he cares about is himself and money.. I guess he is Levys mentor which can only make the clouds above us darker..

Apart from the goalie thats exactly what we need. If we bought quality in those positions then we would be back on track… Lloris is still world class for me and gazza has potential he’s young for a keeps.

The season is over. What will next season bring? More defensive football, Ropey League, lack of investment?

The best thing we can hope for is at least a manager that plays the game the Spurs way. I least we’ll retain some identity.

Thanks Jose, you tried, you failed and Levy is a nightmare. See ya…

Levy has always shifted blame, before Poch’s five season spell Levy had hired and fired more managers than any other chairman. Add the ‘Directors of Football’ in there too.

The PR is always that Levy is constantly busting a gut to help the team be successful. Well this hernia inducing gut-busting has resulted in a single League Cup in 20 years.

Anyone who thinks Levy cares about winning stuff aren’t right in the head…

Agree with the Enic definition but I would add Levy is a minimalist when it comes to anything football. Allows an unbalanced squad, over prices sell valuations so can’t move on deadwood and appoints a manager with an inflated salary and a 2 mill bonus for CL qualification. Implies that any lack of success is a manager problem.

Desperate times throw up desperate measures. I for one would try to play football, keep possession and use the midfield as footballers. Long balls to Moura? Negates every skill set he has. Bad management.

Levy is enic. 30 per cent. Joe lewis owns 70 per cent but look at what else lewis owns and does… Lewis isnt involved in the running of the club, hes rarely at games he doesnt care. Its levys personal project. Levy is chairman. It was levy who tried buying spurs in 98 and 2000 and rejected before he got his way. Levy is head boss at spurs same as abromovich at chavski. He calls the shots, he’s responsible. I’m pretty sure anyway, please educate me if I’m wrong.

Its not cheaper to buy managers than players though i dont get why people say this? 😆 I’m suprised maureen took the job. We have got some superb players, but we only have a handful so injuries to these key overused overworked players takes its toll and when they are out we miss them bad. Compared to squads like liverpool we are threadbare.

I agree. I’m sorry but I don’t want to hear him say we ain’t got players. Of course we miss son and kane most teams would, ut he said the quality of squad is amazing. I can’t remember a run of games where we have been so comprehensively out played like the run we are on at the moment, except for villa. Cannot see what the plan is, except that it’s cheaper to buy a manager instead of players. Don’t worry tho easty, we are just negative 🙄

The ‘troofees’ argument is a complete red herring. We won the League Cup under Sugar and 12 years ago under ENIC. However, there’s no comparison between winning that every 20 years and competing in football’s elite tournament every season and getting to the final.

However, you’re right that to actually win anything and compete on multiple fronts requires commitment from the owners on the pitch.

Signing zero players over a calendar year is just a dereliction of ones responsibilities.

Levy’s main job is to try and play that sort of things to the fans as ‘normal’. He’s been pretty successful at it for 20 years, and some thicko fans are actually still buying it…

Hallelujah. I been saying thus til I’m blue in the face. 15m is alot cheaper than getting poch the players he wanted. It’s not rocket science. I was made up when Toby re signed, but with hindsight I see why poch wanted them out now. It’s not an exaggeration to say we would need 8, may get away with 7 players in who are of a vastly higher level in terms of ability and desire. Its an absolute shambles and before anyone starts having a go about being negative, I take no pleasure in saying that at all. But just because something ain’t pleasant don’t mean it ain’t true

This is what is hard to equate about Jose’s appointment.

If purchases havent been promised then the cynic in me says Joses plumbed for an easy pressure free job on top dollar.

But, Jose may have said to baldy I’ll steady the ship this season but dont judge me till next season?

Either way it is still very much ‘jam tomorrow’ (to use this blogs vernacular!).

Hopefully we finish outside European football for next season and season ticket renewals are not taken up.
Loss of revenue and damage to the ENIC brand these are the things that will make Levy take notice.
By then it might be too late and we can’t attract the better players.Having the greatest stadium and training facilities in the world hasn’t lead them to beat a path to our door thus far has it.Which was another Levy promise.

These are surely the characteristics of players who have all come to the collective conclusion that there is no future at Spurs for winning anything.
Fourth place in the PL is not winning. You don’t win silverware for just getting into the CL.And you certainly don’t win it without sensible investment in the playing squad.

But what you’re suggesting is that there is no autonomy built into Levy’s job. Lewis will have delegated most of the responsibility onto Levy’s shoulders. Does anyone know how many shares Levy holds?

I get this but it’s also my latter point there is so much hate aimed at so many different places that the fanbase goes quiet except for in forums that back their view I agree enic need to leave but we need to drive our anger at the company driving chairman’s decisions not manager mot just levy not the players

Charles Crosby

Bearing in mind that Mourinho took the job on with his eyes wide open. He must have known what he was getting into having watched previous managers struggle under the Levyland system.

No spirit, no guts, failing the most basic technical tasks (like passing and kicking dead balls), no organisation, poor dead ball moves, in attack and defence… List can go on. I am sure I am not smart enough to come up with this, do imagine a coach has said it before, but .. In the absence of quality just do the basics well!

I think Jose is indirectly aiming his comments at Levy and ENIC. The interesting dynamic here is that Jose has an ego that will not sit on the fence as Pooch’s did. Jose when he states that the squad situation is unique in Europe is full square laying this situation at Levy and ENIC’s door. We all know that ENIC’s decision to not strengthen the squad in back to back transfer windows and in general to adopt a net spend business model has created this situation. The fact that Jose with all his knowledge and experience of European football and the way clubs are run states that this situation is the most negative than at any other club in Europe is blowing away the smokescreen that Levy and ENIC have shrouded the clubs lack of success in for decades to reveal what we all have been saying for so long. I would imagine that Levy is getting increasingly irritated by being brought out into the spotlight and I would be surprised if Jose lasts the summer break. July 1st cannot come quick enough for Levy as well I suggest.

Charles Crosby

Since the completion of the new stadium, corporate emphasis has definitely shifted away from its reliance on the football. Levy and Lewis are only worried about the bottom line and building up the new multi-faceted White Hart Lane project – next year’s balance sheet will make for interesting viewing to see how many income streams THFC now has.

If season ticket sales start to collapse in the summer then you might see some positive player investment action from Levy. However the Mourinho negative football problem will still be there.

Maybe your right I’m struggling to see why the man would act in such a way without being told to though because it will only reduce spurs brand price if we dont succeed on the pitch

Where is the siege mentality approach gone though? Jose was famed for this.

It does seem a bit feeble but perhaps that is all we are.

At the minute Jose’s biggest plus it that he has a better grasp of English than Poch and doesnt therefore have to talk in cliches about being happy and brave.

Left back. Right back. 2 proper cms and at least 1 striker. And a goalie.

Good luck with that, Jose.

Sorry, but the buck stops at Levy’s £6m a year desk. The same as team performances stop at Mourinho’s £15m desk.

Several seasons we were at a higher level than Liverpool. They decided to back their manager and invest in the players that he wanted. Once they had success on the pitch, they would then invest in extending Anfield. We decided to continue with either not buying anyone at all or Levy reprising his role as football manager, chief scout and head of transfer policy whilst an events arena was built which went twice over budget and was one season overdue. In fact, we adopted a completely contrarian strategy to Liverpool. Poch warned the board to be brave and they ignored him. For those of you on this blog who have decried Poch for not winning anything, please reflect where we were before he joined the club. Getting us to the CL final was an achievement in itself. There is not a manager in this world who can achieve silverware whilst working under the vampire squid, Enic. Unfortunately, I doubt this mess which will get worse before it gets better, will affect our diminutive leaders sleep patterns.

See I dont get the instant levy bashing (hear me out before you kill me on this sight as I believe enic need to go!) He has been a gift and a curse for spurs in all literal ways and yes I get that the lane beats the shopping centre but what was the man to do? He is following a guideline set by lewis and has choice to follow or leave.
Spurs currently have a cancer at all levels and firing poch was like slapping a different plaster on it instead of sitting through chemo.
I think it’s time to sell for enic but mostly for lewis he is the driving force it’s his mostly and yes levy out for sure just think with what we currently are hate is divided at all levels and makes the team weak
