“Doherty has given away more pens and had more reds than Serge” These fans making typical kneejerk reactions

By Bruce Grove -

Matt Doherty getting sent off was perhaps the only negative for Spurs as they beat Leeds United 3-0 earlier today.

The Lilywhites have been keen to return to form for some time now, as they hadn’t won since they beat Arsenal 2-0 last year.

They have lost to the likes of Liverpool and Leicester City, two teams who are famed for being attacking.

They faced a similarly attacking team against Leeds, yet they won 3-0, but Doherty got himself sent off for a challenge on Pablo Hernandez in the second minute of added time when Spurs had already wrapped up the points.

It was clearly a mistake that was avoidable, but some Spurs fans think he has done more than enough to be dropped.

One fan tweeted that he has given away more penalties and red cards than Serge Aurier, and he got some more unsatisfied fans to join his negative rallying cry.

I suppose every club has “fans” like this, you know the sort, this week sell him etc next week if he scores or makes a goal-line clearance he is better than Virgil van Dijk.

Doherty had a good game but that is irrelevant, what is relevant is that no matter how well Spurs do or how well the players perform you will always get a handful that cannot help themselves and simply have to be negative for the sake of it.

How can you call these kneejerk reactions? He has been with us six months and at best his performances can be described as average,This is not a one-off.He wasn’t bad yesterday, but neither was he great.
His first yellow was a joke as he never made contact with his opponent. However under today’s rules i guess the ref considered it a reckless challenge regardless. For the second,I saw an identical one by Fournels on Bernard which went unpunished apart from the free kick.Where’s the consistency?
Doherty has been a disappointment since his arrival, compared to his Wolves performances, maybe our system just doesn’t suit him.I was one who thought his signing was a good piece of business.

“Doherty had a good game….” seriously? He was shocking, giving balls away into space or straight to an opponent: this is not an isolated incident either! Doherty has had several shockers, but gets a pass particularly from some it would appear, because he’s not Serge Aurier – after all, who needs two witches to burn.

If Aurier had done some of the reckless things that Doherty has been guilty of over the past month or so, you’d be apoplectic in your castigation of the man. Doherty’s place is as a back-up to Aurier who is a better player especially when, like others in the squad, they have to compete for their places.

Feel better now threatening someone who has a different opinion to you?

You are silly. Just a guy who wants some thing to whine about. 55 45 ball and the player gets stepped on. There was nothing malicious about the tackle. Do you ever see how many bone head fouls Xhaka commits per game and most times he is not even book.

Feel for defenders these days. Even 5 years ago, let alone 25, he would have been unlucky to even get a talking to. Defending was an art form yet is being removed from the game.

Do some of these people posting ever played the game. Do they even realized football is a contact sport. Do they even know how difficult it is not to kick someone. YELLOW CARD are not suppose to be issued for fouling another player. It is supposed to be for reckless and endangering the opponent or consistent infractions. The way these cards issued these day. Evey team Diago Maradona played against should be down to 6 men, because every player he comes in contact with fouls him at least 3 times per game. Real foul. Go look at the man’s career. These guys wearing their shin guards practically on their knees and do not get me start with the cleats. I have one pair of boots growing up, real stuff. I was buying my Daugher 2 pairs cleats to time by the time she hit mid season.

also, the pens he “gives away”. Let’s remember the one at Southampton was a joke and following that and Dier’s against newcastle the league changed the interpretation.

Oh what ever. Worry about the debt then. Enjoy your 30 year worry for nothing. For me my academy will deal with that debt.

Of course there are short term restrictions which we may even be past if there was fans in the stadium look dude optimism and realism can intertwine and you say the positives whilst acknowledging it ain’t all sunshine when she’s gone

I am not sure why Jose played Doherty over Serge Aurier. In spite of that penalty aberration against Leicester, Serge has been playing at a higher level than Doherty all season and deserves to start.

I think stadium=temporary restrictions but hopefully in the long run potential freedom and the most self sufficient team capable of competing at the top

I’d guess Jose started Doherty because he expected Leeds to flood the box with 5-7 players, and Sir Jourier, Knight of the Bonzo Table, is a penalty waiting to happen in that scenario. Doherty had a decent game, all in all, not his best, but tbf to him, defending against Leeds has to be a nightmare, swarms of players making runs everywhere.

It was never gonna be great was it? Silly comments or not,(especially the one bringing race into it …huh??)
The fella ain’t young, he’s spent most of his career in league 1 and the championship, it’s not the quality of player the stadium guff guffed about. No surprise there though eh?
Look how Brentford made a statement with their new stadium opening…….they sold there 2 best players.

Stadium= myth.
