Darren Bent questions why Tottenham want to sign a new player in this position

By Bruce Grove -

Tottenham has had a fine transfer window and Jose Mourinho cannot complain about the business that the club has done.

Despite Covid-19 forcing the club to be creative with how they sign players, Spurs still ended the international transfer window with the likes of Gareth Bale, Matt Doherty and Sergio Reguilon.

Tottenham is one of the best sides in the league in terms of talent and they have a backup player for every position at the moment.

However, they still want to sign a centre-back after losing Jan Vertonghen and Juan Foyth in this transfer window, but Darren Bent wonders why.

They are looking to complete a move for Swansea centre back, Joe Rodon before the local transfer window closes, but Bent thinks that they have more than enough players in every position already and they really shouldn’t be looking to sign a new centre-back.

Speaking to Talksport as cited by Football London, Bent said that even though Spurs have lost Vertonghen, they have Japhet Tanganga who can play in that position too.

During an appearance on Talksport, Bent laughed when he was told Swansea want £18m but Daniel Levy initially offered £7m.

“I thought you were going to say something like he offered £5 less,” Bent laughed.

“But listen, they seem really keen on getting him, don’t they? Rodon in the door. You look at the amount of centre-backs they have.

“I know they lost Vertonghen. But they have Toby Alderweireld, Sanchez, Eric Dier plays back there and Tanganga can play there.

“I mean, how many centre-backs are they looking for?”

Correct. Rodon was in Swansea academy through 2016.

With current Scottish views (relatively speaking) on EU, I think Rangers would have been badly shunned over something like that… but certainly an entertaining prospect 🙂

Yeah, Darren Bent is a footballing guru who could barely do his own job and now he comments on others. Go figure.

That would make a bit of sense. My google got me off on a couple of tangents:

1) Welsh teams in English leagues were under the Welsh FA until 2012 when the English FA took over most duties. As Rodon was 15ish in 2012, maybe he counts as homegrown for both – whereas Davies was 19ish in 2012 and you have to do three years in the English FA before you’re 21 to be “homegrown”

2) I wonder if there was any whispers or discussions north of the border for Rangers to start again at the bottom of the English pyramid when they got booted and had to start a new club it would have been the only opportunity for them to do so, as the EFL and EPL are member organisations no team will sanction them joining in a higher league and competing with them.
That also would have really been a middle finger to Celtic haha.

Identical to Davies. Welsh, grew up in Swansea’s academy. Homegrown for PL, foreign for Euro play (for now.)

UEFA is rumoured to be heavily considering the entirety of English FA for homegrown requirements. UEFA’s old ruling already allows for some players homegrown from the club academy, and for others homegrown ‘in the Association.’

I could look this up, sorry. Just have, he has only ever been at Swansea except a loan so he would only be homegrown for the Prem and not for Europe

true about the ceiling, do you know if Rodon is homegrown the way Davies half is? Or fully?

You make an outstanding point about Cirkin. Strong enough to make me agree with you.

Some points to think about. Rodon is age 22, and Wales starts him internationally. I think the ceiling is very high there.

In addition, Rodon is homegrown. Those players are always valuable to a club in allowing a bit of flexibility in other areas.

Honestly, I trust Mourinho to choose the best path forward.

I agree this may be slightly light if we are looking to play games with three CBs, though we still have Crkin on the left for minimal minutes.

January is only two months away so if Skriniar is the managers choice, I would prefer we wait until then and get him in rather than settling for Rodon (22) when we have Sanchez (24) and Tanganga (21).

Or is Rodon – who I had never heard of before deadline day – meant to be the new Beckenbauer?

My immediate thought is that Spurs will want to implement some time with a 3-back formation. 4 dedicated backs and 1 who can cover (while leaving Reguilon as the only LB) is a bit thin.

Davies can cover there too.

I think this is why most fans only wanted a first choice centre back, someone who walks into the starting 11 – that warrants the expenditure.

Otherwise…he could be a great prospect but it still feels like a bit of a punt.
