Troy Deeney has suggested Tottenham’s current problems are the result of a lack of leadership on the pitch.
Spurs are languishing in ninth place in the Premier League table with 10 points from seven games so far, most recently letting a 2-0 half-time lead slip to lose 3-2 against Brighton.
Ange Postecoglou is starting to come under pressure, with this not the first time a lack of defensive organisation has cost him during his spell in charge so far.
Son Heung-min is the current Tottenham club captain but in his absence, Cristian Romero and James Maddison act as vice-captains.
Deeney singles out Cristian Romero in Spurs leadership dig
Deeney has been discussing Spurs’ leadership issues with former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan on the Speaking on the Up Front Podcast.
The former Watford striker singled out Romero specifically for criticism, highlighting him as a player he’d have thrived playing against with his unique brand of physical centre-forward play.
“Who do you think the leaders are at Tottenham when you look on that pitch? Deeney said (via TBR).
“Romero?” Simon Jordan said.
“I wouldn’t call Romero a leader in my opinion, he’s too erratic, he’s a bit like [Lisandro] Martinez at United, good in the tackle, but he’ll get sent off a couple of times this year,” Deeney replied.
“You would’ve liked to have played against him wouldn’t you?” Jordan asked.
“Absolutely,” Deeney said.
