Could Vertonghen’s Cryptic Tweet Mean A New Contract Or A Spurs Exit?

By Joe Fish -

Jan Vertonghen has got the Tottenham Twittersphere talking with this…

Could this be a tease that a new contract announcement is imminent? That would be a major turn up for the books considering that the 32-year-old defender has only started three of our last seven matches in all competitions and is firmly showing the form of a player in decline.

But then again, we were thrown a curveball by his Belgian pal Toby Alderweireld penning extended terms earlier this season, and Jose Mourinho has said that he’d like Vertonghen to say, as The Guardian details.

I hope this isn’t the case, as, while I’ve loved the majority of Jan’s eight years of service, I do feel the summer is the right time for him to move on.

An alternative theory put forward by a couple of fans is that Vertonghen is suggesting that time could be up on the Premier League season because of the Coronavirus outbreak, which is plausible but contradicts current policy and is an odd thing to make the subject of your first tweet in two months.

Well, the clock is apparently ticking so we will soon find out.

That clock ticking is suspect though isnt it 😆 It could mean time is running out to get champs league. It could mean time is going slow because he misses tintin’s mrs 🤣

Verts isn’t in decline yet. He has been found out playing left back for us recently, but this isn’t his position, to play full back in the prem you have to have pace in your locker. One sub and a couple bad games, I think people have been writing him off too early. Centre backs dont rely on their pace, if jan and tobe have looked after their bodies then they can keep going mid to late 30s. Experience counts for alot back there too… On his day sanchez is amazing, an absolute beast at his best he looks like our best defender, but other days hes a liability… I feel our strongest pairing is still verts and toby they are most consistent, most experienced and most reliable. They know each others game well too. I’m sure Maureen will want to keep super jan.. Would be wise to keep him I think competing for a centre back place. It will only be another player for baldy to replace.. A striker, two centre mids and full backs on both sides needed before anything.
